42 Traverse closes early for 2017
DoC have advised that weather damage has made a section of the 42 Travese unsafe for 4x4's and have closed it for the winter. "After the heavy rain over the past week some subsidence has occurred on the 42 Traverse. It looks like potentially an old log culvert that has collapsed or rotted away....

Popular visitor sites in Southland are being destroyed because of inconsiderate four-wheel drive users
Irresponsible 4WD activity puts access in doubt Popular visitor sites in Southland are being destroyed because of inconsiderate four-wheel drive users, forcing DOC to rethink access rights to some areas. Date: 18 November 2016 Over the past twelve months, significant parts of the Mavora Lakes and Bo...

Re: Friends of 42 Traverse Inc.
A general update on Friends of 42 Traverse. There is now a signed MOU in place with DoC that identifies the relationship between the two organisations. DoC have advised that they have allocated a week of work by staff to cut back vegetation sometime in November. That work will still only just be a s...

It seems that no one has heard from the Rotorua Council... they are not highly regarded for their respect for the law around ULR's!

Rotorua area road stopping proposed
I received today the following note from a Rotorua resident with an interest in access... The Rotorua District council (AKA Rotorua Lakes Council ) is trying to dissolve the only public access to Taheke Spring near Okere Falls Rotorua The springs are on Private land, but the road does allow you to s...

Thanks Vaughan, I talked with Brian a couple of months ago but haven't yet updated him on this. There seems to be a good level of interest and from DoC too. You might even get the Bulletin to run an article without needing to take an advert! They can find me at peter.vahry@xtra.co.nz
Thanks

Re: 42 Traverse cut back 2015
I certainly deplore vandalism of the barrier that DoC erected, but there is some responsibility on DoC too in this case, as their website had not been updated and still showed an opening date of 1 December. A bit of frustration can be anticipated if people have traveled some distance after checking ...

Re: Paper roads in Northland
Dylan, most forestry lands are off limits to casual use and joining a club should help with getting occasional access to some forest areas. 'Paper roads' or unformed legal roads (ULR) are often a challenge to identify on the ground, but if you research on the Walking Access mapping system (wams), th...

Re: 42 Traverse cut back 2015
Regretfully, there are ongoing incidents during the winter closures to 4WD's and this year the damage was serious. The current DoC staff are good to work with and have been very helpful in working to get the now postponed cut back organised. A comment fron DoC today... "Many apologies for the i...

Re: 42 Traverse cut back 2015
That's a tricky one... it's illegal to cut vegetation on DoC managed lands without permission so if someone complained about your actions, it could pose problems. DoC are also obliged to follow H&S rules if they do give permission! Part of the planning for the 21/22 had been getting a H&S po...

DoC confirmed yesterday that they require the gate to remain closed until a plan to manage the risk of Kauri die back can be defined. There are many Kauri in the catchment bounded by the vehicle tracks, including one in the top ten of the country's biggest. DoC have, in the past few weeks mapped the...

Re: 42 Traverse cut back 2015
Owhango end was worked on two years ago and some major cutting done. DoC are willing to weed spray but prefer to do it after a cut back and when new growth starts. Otherwise the dead material just becomes even more scratchy. The aim of the new group is to involve MTB people if we can. DoC have $5000...

Re: 42 Traverse cut back 2015
DoC probably won't ask to see a chainsaw cert, but I have to do a H&S plan to cover our arses. Stooping low with a saw soon gets tiresome. With luck DoC may be able to provide some extra brushcutters with harnesses. The pattern that we've found practical, is having teams with a couple of brushcu...

Re: 42 Traverse cut back 2015
I've used both weapons down there and think that the scrub cutter is probably more effective and a little less tiring. However the hedge trimmers can work well in some types of vegetation, they're just harder to work with at shoulder height... at least I find that's the case with my body! The scrub ...

Re: Mamaku, Leslie Road - Intentionally Damaged

Recently the Environment Court on the West Coast refused to stop a legal road along the coast even though several baches were built on it. The road was recognised as access to the coa...
