Re: Clints Cruiser Project

2020 Update. Cruiser has been running well. Got in a last hardcore hoon on the local gnar just before lockdown. https://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-sSBM3Dq/0/e12cde89/L/i-sSBM3Dq-L.jpg ...which resulted in smashing a side window on a bank... Of course not the side I had a spare for... Not totally a ...

Re: The "Going to buy some 4x4s" Project

Much as I dig the looks of the FJ Cruiser, it's worth remembering that they are basically just a V6 Prado with a different body. I'd have to REALLY need a ute before I'd buy one if shopping used, you pay such a massive premium for anything with a tray, plus more again if it's a Hilux or Ranger. Chee...

My cruiser is done through Classic Cover. Good price & years back when I made a claim through them for a motorbike crash it was pretty stress free. They were recommended by an insurance broker mate.

Re: Clints Cruiser Project

The cruiser has been on firewood duty over the last couple of months so now ours & mum's woodsheds are all stocked up. I wanted to sort out a few 'nice to have' jobs & decided to get stuck in when I broke a rear spring a couple of weeks ago. Cracks in the steel had been steadily corroding aw...

No excuses now. Looking forward to seeing some more progress!

Getting a lathe & a TIG in the shed was a quantum leap for me in terms of what I could fabricate. You can design & build much cooler shit when you're not limited by the capability of your tools.

Very tidy! I'd shorten that rope a bit if you're actually going to use it though, looks like a jam-up just waiting for the first slightly sideways pull.

Cardwells have a good range of cromoly tube, looks like .156" might be the thickest in 3/4 though. They used to sell by the foot, give them a call.

Re: Prado - Southland Vehicle Project

I got some Hankook RT03 MT's as they are a fairly close pattern for an MT - so probably a good option if you want to split the difference between an AT & an MT. They were fairly cheap, handle well on the road, not too rowdy & are wearing well so far.

Bugger! Truck was looking good too. If you've got a hoist & a transmission jack gearbox swaps are easy :D If not I would recommend doing what I did last time I had the box out, bodge up a bit of a cradle that attaches to the trolley jack, bolts on to the gearbox mount at one end, with a scissor ...

Scrappy's around here don't sell stuff but not sure about Tga. What you do have in the Mount is HJ Asmuss Engineering supplies, assuming they are similar to their Kawerau branch they should have a good range of steel bar/pipe/angle/RHS with a 1/4 length minimum. Bloody handy for small projects. Get ...

Re: Warn 8274 DIY upgrades

Looking good! Another idea I've seen for actuating a freespool is to use hydraulics with clutch master/slave cylinders. Though as Mdlva says an air ram is good as once switched it will hold the pressure on until things line up & it can click in.

Re: prado/surf SAS 4" lift custom radius arms

The way I'd do it would be to design them to suit your build exactly, machine up the diff end bush housings (or hack them out of some old suspension links if you can find some the right size) get the arm profile cut from 30mm plate with holes to weld your bush mounts into. The chassis end is where i...

Re: prado/surf SAS 4" lift custom radius arms

You probably can't angle the arms up very far on the diff like that without them hitting the steering tie rod that sits above them tie rod is in front of the diff. No worries then :D My LJ71 had it behind but hilux/surf must have it in front? In that case you'd probably be better off making your ow...
