Re: Ln106 build
My understanding of the benefit for replacing the crush-tube with a solid space & shims is that when it comes time to replace the pinion seal, you don't have to worry about screwing up the pinion bearing preload which is done by the action of torquing up the pinion flange nut. If there's an (alr...

Re: 2000+ Hilux
Hi, I owned a 2000 double cab 2.7L SR5 Hilux (RZN169) between 2009-2013. It didn't have airbags, so I'm unsure when they started having them fitted, maybe around 2002 with a facelift. Due to the torsion bar style independent front suspension, travel is quite limited & it's more difficult to &quo...

Re: Modified 4WD Insurance 2019
Bit of an update: Called Classic Cover, and their prices are very sharp, however they specifically mentioned that they don't cover any form of offroad related claim (e.g. drowned in river). I thought I'd give NAC another call, and it was a good thing I did, because when I was comparing my modificati...

Re: Modified 4WD Insurance 2019
Ah ok, cheers for the info. To be honest, I think I'll stick with NAC for one more year (just because it's easier). In that time I'll ask around some other insurance outlets to see what they offer and for how much. I see there are dedicated companies that deal with classic cars & performance veh...

Thanks Calvin, might start doing some shopping around.
I've never had a problem with NAC, and for a few years their premiums were dropping. The last couple have increased though, and this year the theft excess AND premiums have both increased by a decent amount.

Modified 4WD Insurance 2019
Hey guys, Just wondering what vehicle insurance providers you're with for your "modified" 4WDs. I've had the Hilux fully insured with NAC for the past 6 years, but this year they've increased their premium and excess rates to an amount that I just can't agree with. I gave them a call to se...

Drill & tap the exhaust manifold and install the EGT thermocouple before the turbo. Or find something that you can unmount from the manifold in order to save metal swarf from getting into the turbo when doing the job. I installed mine on a metal plate which was blocking the old EGR pipes, and it...

Re: Terrano fuel tank question
Have you tried treating it with some diesel bug killer? Let it soak in for a while and then give it a good flush, and fill up with fresh diesel. Diesel bug likes to grow in fuel that has water in it, so if you're regularly filling up the tank then you should have fewer issues with water being presen...

Just out of interest, what's the model of gauge you have? I've recently bought an Auto Meter 3337-M short sweep electric water temp gauge, and it seems to be reading low, although I haven't got much to back up my claim. Your gauge definitely is missing the metal tabs for the electrical connections. ...

I've got an LN130 Surf chassis under an LN85 (2wd) cab for the Bitsalux, so that's a relatively easy chassis option.

Re: WD21 Terrano Air con
I'm not familiar with this particular vehicle, but there more than likely will be a refrigerant low pressure switch somewhere in the system that will prevent the compressor clutch engaging. This is designed to prevent compressor failure due to lack of lubrication as the refrigerant acts as a lube. I...

Things like this might not be a WOF issue, however it's the insurance that you have to worry about if for whatever reason you end up having a woopsie one day, and someone's sharp enough to spot that things aren't in their stock position from the factory. Same goes for body lifts, or even running lar...

Hi Jafa, cheers for the response, I'm thinking an intercooler with inlet/outlet on the same side would be a better fit in my engine bay than a barrel type one, but I'll keep your kit in mind.
Diorama, did you import the Frozen Boost kit setup, or was there a supplier in NZ that you went through?

WTB: Early 90's Hilux/Surf LH/RH indicator lights
As the title states, I'm after both LH and RH indicator assemblies from an '89-97 Hilux or Surf (Pretty sure they're the same).
Think LN106 or L/KZN130 style.
Also if there's an entire grille up for grabs, then I might take that too. Mine is buggered.
I can pick up around the Manawatu area.
Cheers

Thanks for the reply Tweake. I'm aware of the potential for core leaks. I can live with inspecting it more often for signs of water in the intake before it has the chance to become a major issue. Could even get serious and make a water trap with float switch to alert when total failure has occured (...

Hi guys, I've been throwing the idea around for a while now about replacing my current factory Daihatsu front mount intercooler on the Bitsalux with a water to air unit. I'm running the stock turbo at 14PSI on a 2.8L 4 banger diesel if that helps. Main reason for this is to reduce the chance of punc...

You can buy the pistons on their own. I did this when rebuilding the front calipers earlier this year as they were quite badly pitted. BNT stock them, although they aren't cheap. You can try TradeMe too, I know they have toyota pistons. Some other Nissan vehicles probably use the same calipers/pisto...

I just rebuilt the rear drum brakes on the Bitsalux ( Toyota surf brakes). These have a gear and a metal tab acting like a ratchet to 'self adjust' the shoes as they wear. This metal tab is actuated by the handbrake cable in this particular system, not sure about the Mistral ones though. When I fitt...

+1 for replacing the crush tube with solid spacer and shims.
Just makes replacing the pinion seal such a quick and easy job and you know the job is done properly instead of guesswork with the one-use-only crush tube.
