Re: Rear winch on a disco?
There's room on a disco to fit a winch underneath on the passenger side parallel with the rear drive shaft. (with a bit of adjustment to the exhaust). Winch line then runs over drive shaft to other side and can then be routed down the chassis rail to front or rear. Body lift helps as there is then r...

Re: Snatch strap opinions
In the early years a lot of the near misses I had and damage to trucks was from snatch recoveries. You just don't have any control, and they are dangerous even when used properly. They fatigue so fail too often. 3 ton of charging steel on an elastic band is just begging for trouble. I would say if y...

RE mitsi CV. No, does not look like a traditional front wheel drive cv. Rubber boot is sort of internal. If you cant find a photo and would like one pm and I'll sort one.

I'm rural, just out of Rangiora, have plenty of room on the garden, workshop (ish) facilities, a couple of spare bedrooms, and would be happy to help out any North Islanders wanting to compete in MWC. (you would have to promise not to beat me too many times though!) Only possible problem is a tight ...

Re: Drive shaft misalignment?
Maths aside, if the drive shaft is not nice and straight, or there is wear in the spline between the two halves its gonna chew out the UJ's and commit suicide. For 200kmh balancing it is not an option either. When Mitsi put the 3.5L in the Pajero the whole driveline got longer and left them with a v...

Good to see you making progress. You cant beat grinding off welds and doing it again.... and again. I have a pair of 1" rod ends here with spherical bearings. Bearings are shagged but could be replaced. If they are any good for your lower control arms you can have em. They came with Dave's stee...

Re: learn me Disco style's
My thoughts - keep the D40 and get a cheap v8 disco for abusing off road. They do have their fair share of issues but would be top of my list when it comes to off road ability versus cost. Should get a tidy one for $2.5k. Go for a face lift mk1. The v8 itself is actually a pretty robust unit althoug...

Hydraulic steering help / advice
Trying to do the maths and knowing what sort of output I'm gonna get from the standard Toyota power steering pump would be helpful. So anybody got any idea what sort of pressure and the flow rate? Is it a fixed displacement pump or a variable displacement one. Thinking it will be the latter? Also ha...

Re: PAJERO FACTORY LOCKER 4.636
I wouldn't recommend anything bigger than genuine 33" tyres. I say genuine because some 35's are nearer 33. Power wise with the 3.5 auto you will be fine, and the rear axle you have is plenty strong enough, but the front axles and cv's will be at their limit. Also you have the biggest / stronge...

Re: which is a better setup?
I'd second WEHI. Separate springs and shocks are cheaper and prob more reliable than coilovers. As a starting point, at ride height, have top arms horizontal and bottom arms pointing to top of front wheel or slightly lower. Chassis mounts with a couple of hole options to alter angle of top arms is a...

Re: PAJERO FACTORY LOCKER 4.636
Its probably the diaphragm leaking and one will be available from mitsi. I altered both ends of an axle case to get a wider axle by using 2 long half shafts from a standard axle. Never finished the project though as I ended up needing a rear axle with the diff offset to one side. Hence the reason I ...

Re: 4.625 ratio Safari
A 3L pajero will be 4.875 and the 3.5L with the bigger 9.5" diff will be 4.625. The 2.8td Safari's had a 4.6 ratio. All you need to do is find one of those! Safari axle is wider though. ARB's locker guide has all the models and ratios for reference.

Re: PAJERO FACTORY LOCKER 4.636
I do still have the 9.5" diff with factory locker. Its 4.9 ratio but your crown wheel and pinion should fit it. It also has an air leak. Don't have any compressors or ECU's left. The lockers have different length drive shafts too. One side you can reduce your existing one as the splines are lon...

Hi Brent, The heads came from a truck I parted out so don't know exactly what work was done. The previous owner said they had 'been done'. It looks like a professional job. The cam bearing caps are all engraved with their location and the heads are much cleaner inside and out compared to the rest of...

Pinion bearing pre load or crown wheel and pinion mesh shouldn't affect the locker. Jack it up and test operation - ie turn one wheel backwards and see if it ratchets as it should.

Re: Winch brake?
The brake mechanism is different to most winches. Its like a 3 legged stool with barrel bearings either side each leg which are in a pear shaped cam. Any drive trying to come back through it, locks it. Like I said its a clever design. I have 3 of these winches all in parts down the shed. I had one, ...

Re: Winch brake?
The brake is inside the drum at the motor end. Its an ingenious little device, but too small so shits itself very easily. I've met a few of those winches and they are next to useless. Take it back, get a refund, and buy a Runva winch would be my advice.

Re: Finally got my Pajero
I've got a factory locker for the 3.5l but don't have the half shafts for it. Easiest thing to do is just tighten up the LSD that's in there now. Some of the 2.8 diesels had 4.9 ratio if you wanted to get the gearing back with the 33" tyres. Worth the bother if you are fitting lockers (whilst t...
