Re: susan, part suzuki part nissan

Thanks Mudluva - good idea! However, the bolts we used had sufficient area under the hexagonal head to allow a portion of the head to be ground off to provide the flat and still not pull through the flange. I'm also a bit wary about welding something on the head because these are high-tensile bolts ...

Re: 1988 SJ410 conversion 1992 1.6L Vitara Engine

Reece, Probably the biggest problems with any engine conversion are re-wiring, making new engine mounts (and removing the original mounts in the process), and making sure it will fit. You also have to consider how to mate the gearbox shaft to the transfer case, and before considering this you should...

Re: A Frame. Towing a non road legal vehicle.

Just use a tow dolly. Taz, by "Tow Dolly" do you mean one of those things that are registered as a trailer, and on which you place the front wheels of your 4x4 and tie it down while leaving the rear wheels of the 4x4 on the ground? If so, then they are banned in Britain because they are t...

Re: A Frame. Towing a non road legal vehicle.

If we accept that it's no longer legal (or even no longer a "grey area") to tow an unregistered vehicle with an A frame, then what are the options? The obvious answer is to use a trailer, but this means more towing mass (trailer PLUS 4x4 vehicle) which means some towbars will not be certif...

Re: A Frame. Towing a non road legal vehicle.

We tow our Suzuki (see the Susan thread in the mods/builds section) with an A frame from West Auckland to Woodhill 4wd park several times a year. To make sure the Suzuki does not obscure the towing vehicles rear lights, we rig a light bar across the Suzuki roll cage. We have passed stationary police...

Re: susan, part suzuki part nissan

CORRECTION re the rear wheel studs . The Suzuki studs DO NOT HAVE SPLINES, but instead rely on a flat on one side of the head that sits against a mating flat cast into the brake drum. This is what stops the stud from rotating when it's done up, so the cheap HT bolt may not work if it is replacing a...

Re: susan, part suzuki part nissan

3VILC – We are in Massey, West Auckland. The only place we have gone wheelin’ is the Woodhill 4x4 park, and a few times along the beach from Muriwai to the South Kaipara Head area. My son (Liam) and I would like to try some other terrain, such as the Thompson Track across the Kaimai range. In answer...

Re: susan, part suzuki part nissan

Susan must now have a name change, because the smoky old Datsun A15 engine is useless going up steep hills with bumps - the engine cuts out momentarily, usually just at the time you need full power. The problem is the carburettor, so the son and I (but mostly "I") are in the process of ins...
