Did these mechanics tell you why or what exactly was going to explode and kill everything?
Leaks are common, probably the rear main. No biggie.
And yeah as above, for that kind of coin you can build a fantastic engine with $$ left over.
3.1 non turbo? Sounds bloody awful to me

Re: Insurance for 4wd ... Any suggestions??
Im with AA. Their value was a little more than I paid so went with that and added all the extras as I went along. I have an agreement also that I pay more excess for when off road  So just go with the basic price and then add value off all the goodies you put on, make sure they are listed ...

Re: Legal limits for suspension lift
Yes but you will note neither of those are the actual VIRM or the LVVTA threshold check sheet. Which is where 99% of inspectors and people look.
So the law is nothing over 50mm, and body lift always needs certs.
But the common resources used to check those rules are currently missing those notes.

You can also lower the front diff if you want a bigger job. Re the 50mm limit. How do I put this... It's not in the current online version of the regs. Yet. So currently you can go more than a 2" lift if you don't have to mod any mounts etc. Also can you find anything about body lifts in the cu...

Yeah absolutely brilliant driving. Sure pretty much all the NZRC top runners were out or hit problems but Hayden was still in a class of his own. Years ago Pasi Hagstrom and Juha Kankunnen posted a few top 10 stage times in BDA's on the same rally. On a more somber note, the guy driving the Escort i...

Is cursing speed when you find out your tow vehicle hasn't got the grunt to get up that hill?

Re: Auckland Region tracks of Andy Cockroft's book
It's not completely correct. A farmer is allowed to use a paper road for grazing etc so therefore a temporary electric fence or something can be erected but permanent blocking? Nope. Only people that can do that legally are councils and / or doc if on that land. Ok so would be allowed to pass throu...

Re: Does a gearbox crossmember need a cert?
Gearbox cross member is a tricky one. Reading through the thresholds on the LVVTA site everything seems to suggest that if you are not altering the crash structure (frontal protection laws) you are all good. until you get to the bit about gearbox substitution. Which says : The OE gearbox cross-mem...

Sell it and buy something else. That's straight forward! :P Putting different motors in things is never straight forward. But it also depends on your ability and definition of straight forward.... Or, manual conversion and do the suggested mods to the 2.8. I'm sure there will be someone nearby who's...

Re: Pre-turbo EGT's.
From my looking around the EGTs seem to be very engine dependant. I put a gauge in my MU and looked for info about what it should be. Scared myself silly reading numbers from 1kz owners as I blow those numbers out of the water, I can almost hit 900 on a long hard hill climb, although usually 850ish ...

The flexi doesn't last anywhere near as long as pipe does. Also it can't do tight radius bends. It might do the job, but for how long?
Try any exhaust shop, or truck parts supplier.
3" is on the small side so you may have to wait for them to get some in.

Go and talk to the guy doing the cert. He is the one you need to make happy.
TFS Rodeo and Bighorn springs also fit. You could see about a set of LWB Bighorn springs from a wrecker as replacements. Could be a cheap way to gain a few inches.

Definitely do EGT and full exhaust from turbo back before turning up the wick. The stock exhaust with the cold weather heater valve in it is very restrictive. You will probably find you will be able to bust 800c in long hill climbs with the exhaust as stock so more fuel would not be high on my list!

Mine did a good impression of a sieve when I got it. 2 litres of oil per 100km  If there's any front seals leaking you will see it dripping off the bottom of the cam cover. If it's leaking there you will need to replace the cam belt as they don't like soaking in oil. Oil around the turbo, may...

Re: tell me about the last of the 1st gen bighorn
I have a 2.8 MU, so might be a little lighter than a Bighorn, and I have no issues motoring along. The only time I wish I had more power is when passing a B train that's doing 90. I do have an intercooler (easy to retrofit) and a 2.5" downpipe (rest of the exhaust to come) I'd call a 2.4 Surf g...
