Consider this a formal picture request.

Glad you have seen the light. You'll never look back from a rear mounted winch.

Thanks Mudtroll. That's quite a relief. Yeah Tim, I was planning to run the "suck it and see" approach. A few reasons I went this way. They are what is required for cert. The extra forces I'm going to subject them to by putting the shocks on the lower links. Haven't read a lot of good thin...

Wish I had a finger folder. Instead I'll make do with my vice/RHS/welder/sledgy folder. http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj73/shortylux/finger%20folder_zpsfnur5htg.jpg . Also my rod ends arrived. They're not small. http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj73/shortylux/Rod%20end_zpsqspoqlov.jpg

Hey Lax, in the above situation, what do you do for the rear diff? Is there a factory application in 4.88 that suits the rear of a GQ?

And if you're not concerned with how long the existing LSD lasts (ie you are going to rebuild or replace) then you can just put normal diff oil in. The LSD oil has a friction modifier in it to reduce how much the clutchs grab. Normal oil with make it bite a little more (not as smooth) but obviously ...

I know some people remove one of the lower studs (that hold the diff head in) and replace it with a bolt so that this can work as a drain.

Personally I think I'd want something bigger than that.

Re: Checkerheads new project.

I had a quick skim through you posts and I can't find if you are making your arms adjustable. If you aren't I would recommend doing it as it makes any small tweaks really easy! Won't be adjustable on the vehicle (ie not built with LH and RH threaded ends), but both upper and lower links will have a...

Ruffstuff 20% off. Want some rod ends?

Ruff stuff have 20% off until December. http://www.ruffstuffspecialties.com/catalog/78x78SET.html I'm probably going to purchase one pair of rod ends. I can add 2 more pairs with out the freight price changing. So if anyone wants a pair we could order together and share freight. Unless anyone has a ...

Nope. Just had a look. Prices are pretty similar (I messed up in the message above, I meant $250 not $350).

Some days it would be great to be in America.

Also Ruffstuff have 20% off until December and I am resigning my self to the fact that they might be the best option for rodends. Still, $350 (nzd, incl freight) for a pair of 1"1/4' rod ends does not excite me. Any one want a pair of rod ends (or something small) so we can share freight? It's ...

Re: Checkerheads new project.

You want your AS numbers to be set so you achieve good drive down on the front axle. All the other stuff will seem really unimportant when your nose is coming over your roof on the first good hill climb. I would probably look at making upper links out to 75%ish in your case. But ultimately, the cal...

Re: Drive shaft misalignment?

This does make sense. The double cardon is basically doing the work for Suspension travel and the UJ at the pinion is doing the work for pinion angle change, bush flex etc. Also gets the pinion up a little so that I'm more likely to slide it over things. Might have to re-evaluate my plan for the low...

Re: PRADO 120 - temp going up with hills

Temp being a little higher is no prob. Just means that the thermostat is doing its job and holding a more constant temp. (And the new thermostat may be a few degrees hotter). And that's also why it's not spiking like it was before.

Sounds like a win.

Good points Churchill. I can halve the angle as I am talking about the flanges being 12 degrees from parallel, rather than being parallel but off set with a 12 degree angle between them. How ever this makes me realize the very important point that I haven't been factoring the operating angle in to m...

Hey Tim. Yeah I forgot that the cold drawing would improve the tensile strength of the DOM. So point taken there. I can't find it now, but I'm sure the Sch 40 I'm getting from steel and tube was 48000 PSI (330 MPa). If so that puts the Sch40 at 75% of the DOM. Re the chromo, I have previously read t...

One thing to consider though is you rarely run at ride height, even on flat ground you will squat under acceleration, rise under brakes, and then throw some ground change, and yeah you prob want less than 11 degrees of change Good call Dan. Nice one Bruce. Looks like a good solution to a common and frustrating problem.

Did you consider mounting the winch under your tray with a meter or so to your first rope guide? (this way the rope always lays nicely) or was it to much of a mission for guides with the steel rope?

About UJ joint angle, I've just been through this with my truck. Basically stuff all deviation is acceptable. Page 12 was really helpful:. Thanks Churchill. Good link! Just had a quick read. Your uppers look to short, they wanna be around 80% of the length of the lowers. Should help with your pinion angle change. :D but mess with everything else  Thanks Dan. I have looked at that. My uppers are 27" lowers are 37.3". So uppers are 72% of the lowers length. If I pump them...

Drive shaft misalignment?

How much misalignment is acceptable? I know the input and output flanges should be parallel. I can sort that at ride height, but if my pinion angle changes by 12 degrees through out the full range of suspension travel, is this ok? This not just a crawler. I expect this thing to be able to get up tow...

Don't solid mount a rad onto anything that has the potential to have torsional twist or shear (ie your roll cage), especially if it is alloy. They like to have lots of isolation and don't like to twist in any way, shape or form. (ask me how I know). Sweet. Sounds like I will come up with some kind ...
