Re: learn me Disco style's

Recently got a V8 Disco 1 as a toy, so no great experience with them yet - but quite a bit of reading... D1 better than later models for departure angle since they lengthened the body on later ones. ABS brakes cause lots of problems even without burying the wheel sensors in mud & water, so WOF's...

When you select low range - it should automatically engage 4WD. So the locking of the transfer case is normal. The noise may well be a universal joint due for replacement. Check for any play, and if they feel OK, get some grease into them.... Eliminate the simple and cheap possibilities before the b...

Re: FJ62 1988 5 Speed gearbox rebuild help

It's been said already - but be 100% sure the whine is the gearbox - not the diff. I've been there - gearbox swap and didn't fix the problem. A whole weekend and $800 for nothing... If the noise changes when you are on or off the throttle, it's quite likely the diff. Remove the rear driveshaft and u...

Re: how many kms out of your kl71s?

There may be some variation in quality, or maybe I was just unlucky - but I had a set of 35in KL71's half worn after about 10,000km (38psi) and three punctures through the tread on gravel forestry roads. Admittedly a heavy truck (Safari) but not driven hard on the road. I won't be buying them again....

If it's going on a Safari - then assuming it has a manual gearbox, you'd get far more pulling power and reliability at lower cost by getting a PTO setup http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/car-parts-accessories/nissan/other/auction-831421140.htm or http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/car-parts-accessories/n...

I've got a LWB Safari with aftermarket turbo - and it certainly ticks most boxes - and fantastic for towing. Tough as nails - running 35's and regularly abused offroad. Towed the caravan to Westport to do Sav's Westport Challenge in 2013, then towed the caravan home again. Most other trucks travelle...

15 x 10in rims - deep offset 90mm backspace

I got these rims with a set of tyres but offset is too much for the safari, and prefer 8in rims anyway. They have been used offroad and have a few dents in the bead, and a few areas of surface rust - mainly around valve holes. So any interest is a swap for 15 x 8in rims with similar backspace (80-90...

I always tie down by the axles - as stated one hold forward, the other to the rear. To stop body roll, another strap to the chassis each side - but only light tension so it stops it lifting but still allows suspension compression. That way it's easier on the trailer wheels & suspension if you hi...

The distance from the inside wall of one tyre to the inside wall of the other. Re: replacing tie rod ends

Wheel alignment on a safari isn't worth paying for. The only adjustable part is toe-in / toe-out. Wheels should be parallel. So with wheels pointing straight ahead, measure the distance between the front of the tyres, and then the rear of the tyres. Measurement should be equal. If not wind the tie-r...

I had KL71's on a LWB Safari. They were wearing stupidly fast, and after 3 punctures through the tread on gravel roads, I sold them on and replaced them with Maxxis Trepadors. Couldn't be happier now. It may have been due to the heavier truck as others seem to rave about KL71's but never again for m...

Run with whatever is on the truck. Both Silverstones & radial MT's work well in snow. Neither are any good on ice - chains needed. Or use the tyres which you have chains to fit.... Not sure how effective chains will be on Silverstones - they'll probably disappear into the voids - but I have a se...
