Some good options up the Branch or Leatham valleys too. Very good DOC huts and you can drive to the door... There's a club training day next Sunday (8 July) if you're free. PM me if interested...

Re: ac as air compressor?

The aircon compressor can put out around 600+psi. A pressure switch around 100psi is ideal so it's similar to a standard compressor and with an air tank good for running air tools as well as tyre inflation. Make sure there is a relief valve fitted as well!

Air-con pump as an oil pump?

I'm suffering the V6 Commodore sump problem with losing oil pressure on hills. No room to re-locate the bowl to the rear of the sump so looking to dry-sump it. Plan A is to mount a spare power steering pump where the air-con compressor goes (to use as scavenger pump) but there's abit of fabrication ...

Re: Commy surf ecu

I've been told you need to be very careful to avoid sitting it on the rev limiter as they work by cutting the fuel to the injectors - causing a significant shock loading on the crank as it cuts in & out. If you want to sit on the limiter - best to get an aftermarket system to progressively cut t...

Re: where is slab hut track

Heading towards Ikamatua, it's on the left about 500m before the Slab Hut DOC Camping Area which is signposted. The start of the track goes into a small shingle pit area, and up a very scratchy bit of track to an open area, then continues from the left end of the clearing. It gets VERY knarly with d...

Re: Front end clicking

Ok cool thanks! Are the expensive to replace? Genuine Nissan ones are expensive, but the knock-off's can be a lottery. I tried 2 REPCO ones at around $100-odd each, & they sheared on the stub-axle and broke the hubs as well so it was false economy. The genuine ones are stronger and tend to shat...

Re: Front end clicking

Don't get too worried- it's just a sign of wear. No great urgency to replace - but it is a sign you should carry a spare. Try to avoid lots of power while turning and it'll last a long time. Maybe worth pulling it and packing some more grease in if you need to get into the hub for any other reason l...

Probably a faulty fuel cut-off solenoid. Or its getting engine oil in the cylinders - is it burning a lot of oil? Or has the oil been overfilled? Any half-competent diesel mechanic should be able to diagnose the problem quickly...

I brought a spare air con pump, when I got another steerbox. but GQ run the nasty aircon gas , and coms need new seals to run the less efficient, gas they have now :D It won't be for air con, I'm going for an endless air setup. I thought if I use the original compressor it will be easier to sort ou...

Re: CO2 tyre fill system?

If there's any moisture in your tyres, the addition of CO2 will form Carbolic acid, which, while pretty mild, will promote rust inside your rims. Of course - any air compressor will also generate water unless it's going through a tank first to settle out the moisture...

Close to $300 per rim? Why not http://www.4wdbits.co.nz/ProductDetails.aspx?productID=4464 for around $100 ea (assuming brakes will clear 15in rims. You'll find 15in tyres are cheaper (although usually wider) than 16in too. But having spent a lot of time driving those things in my Army days - first ...

LN65 Hilux gearbox crossmember - free

Free to a good home - heavily reinforced crossmember and showing the scars to justify it. Gearbox rubber mount is buggered. If not wanted, it'll go in the scrap bin. I can get it to Christchurch or Nelson at no cost for collection in a couple of weeks.

Re: Land cruiser pto sticky stuck and frustrating

The key can get burred so it's not binding on the shaft, but where it slides over the keyway - you need to dismantle the end of the winch and file off any rough spots. And you can mount the winch a little higher and closer and run the driveshaft alongside the radiator and above the chassis cross-mem...

From Murchison, heading to Westport, you turn right just before the one-way Iron Bridge over the Buller River, and this turns into a gravel road which fords the Mackley River, and then the power pylon maintenance road through to Denniston. The river crossings are the only potentially difficult bits,...

WOF and cert guidebook says minimum 8.5inch, but practical experience is that 8inch are great but potential WOF issues if they're fussy. Definitely won't get a cert if you need one in future with 8in. Backspace of 100mm at least (0 offset) but a bit more is good. 10in rims look nice but will allow s...
