Re: How much tread is effective ?
New tyres typically around 15mm. WOF requires 1.5mm but less tham 5mm and they're pretty much buggered for offorad work. So they can be advertised as "half worn" at around 7-8mm, but effectively not much life left at that. In my mind half the value is gone in the first 3-4mm - so you shoul...

Re: NISSAN SAFARI PTO WINCH NOT FREE SPOOLING
There is a grease nipple on the underside next to the free-spool hub. Get some grease into it while turning the winch with PTO engaged. It may just be very tight from lack of use and/or lubrication. If still no joy, then remove the free-spool hub (6 x 8mm hex bolts) and make sure the internal mechan...

Re: Snorkel Head, Which way to point
More about when you're not in a convoy - The snorkel is way cleaner than the engine bay or wheel-well / front guard where most intakes seem to be.
Plus the red bull-dust in Oz is very heavy and doesn't rise as high, and settles much more quickly than on our gravel roads

Not quite - The reason most 4WD vehicles in outback Ozzie have snorkels is to get cleaner air on dusty roads. They very seldom see deep water...

Rangie witha 350 Olds V8 Diesel
I've just aquired a Classic Rangie with a very tired 350 V8 Diesel Oldsmobile motor. Clouds of blue smoke, bugger all compression, and they only produced 125 HP when new.. Already removed to make way for a Commie V6 which was planned for the "Pink Rat" Hilux winch challenge truck which wil...

Check good contact on battery leads - both +ve at battery and starter motor, and earth leads on battery, chassis nad engine. Also check the crimps on the leads are still good and clean.

Re: Can you grease Y60 swivel hubs without disassembling?
4 bolts holding a flat plate top & bottom of the swivel hub. The top ones include the steering ball-joints. I usually remove one of the bottom ones so any water can drain, although if your inner axle seal is leaking then be prepared for a fair bit of mushy mix of gear oil & grease to land on...

The old 2F will run even if it's a long way out - 20deg or more... Also check there's not too much play in the distributor shaft - that can allow it to continually change but will be obvious with the timing light once you find the TDC marks. It was a few years back, but I think mine had an indent do...

Try disconnecting the EGR valve vacuum hoses - worked for me. It's two vacuum operated valves mounted on the exhaust manifold. I just pulled the vacuum hoses and plugged them. Others recommend removing the valves and replacing with a blank plate.

Re: swb safari - rim off set for silverstones?
I've recently changed from 8in to 6in rims - keeps the bead tighter at low pressures and less crap gets in the bead. 7in rims are probably ideal, but you use what you can get... Also - get the heaviest steel rims you can find cos at low pressure the rims take a beating. And you want them sitting so ...

Re: bighorn vs mu for towing
I would have thought you'd be better with a LWB (4-door) for towing. Both the extra length and weight make it more stable. And even the LWB isn't a "big" truck. Still a lot smaller than a Landcruiser or Safari, and the turning circle is exceptionally good - so very easy as a city vehicle. ...

Replacing them next week. I have one tyre with a significant tear in the tread which has exposed the steel belt. Still holds air (tubeless), but really only suitable as a spare. The other 3 are in good condition. All 4 tyres have even wear across the tread and about 7-8mm tread remaining (measured i...

Re: Whats a good Airing down psi pressure for silverstone mt
I run 18psi front, and 15psi rear on a LWB Nissan Safari, and 8psi front, 6psi rear on the Hilux. That's 35x11.5x15 tyres on 6in rims with tractor tubes. Low pressures do make a big difference - larger footprint, softer ride, less chance of punctures, and the flexing of the tyre helps better mud cle...

Sell em & buy a 12V - keep an eye on the Supercheap Auto specials - I got a 95000lb Ridge Ryder for $435. Or recently they had 12000lb ones (with synthetic rope) for around $800. OK for general use but obviously not real heavy use. Probably no worse quality than what you have....
