kzn130 lsd options

hey guys just after some advice on changing the diff in my surf its a 1kz.

I use it mainly for hunting and it gets into the odd tough spot and the open diff is not doing the trick. where do I start with looking at my options to change it, I attempted to do some research online about diffs and lsds and now know how they work but just confused myself about what i need. I gather that an lsd is the best option for what I'm doing but I came across a kit on trademe that converts an open diff to an lsd, has anyone used one of these?

Do I have to put an lsd in both diffs or can I get away with doing just one, if so is front or rear best?

obviously I dont plan on spending a fortune on something but at the same time I want to do it once and plan on keeping it a while. I think I might have caught the bug on four wheel driving :D

any help would be awsome

that's a bit different to a LSD. its a diff lock that unlocks momentarily when you turn corners on the road then locks up again when you straighten up. harder on tyres on the road. depends how keen you are on 4wding, an LSD will suit better if its mainly a road vehicle with a bit of hunting, this if you are wanting to do a bit more.

as above your looking at Diff Locks not LSD's,

just a point to note Toyota LSD's are a waste of time the springs always lose tension and they very rapidly start working as an open diff the same as you currently have, you can shim the springs up but you still end up with them losing tension and back to square one with an open diff again :D

those auto lockers you are looking at are good bang for your buck :D

The locker, from what I've read, will work really well in the front. Along with a set of manual hubs not only will the reliability of the front drivetrain improve but it will improve the capabilities off road greatly. No need to worry about tyre wear on the road as the fronts will no be engaged whilst on the blacktop.

was thinking of one in the rear. I agree one in the front and free wheeling hubs would make a big difference off road but not affect road characteristics.

I've had lockrights before but not these, when I get around to doing the sas on my 185 surf I'm going to put a lokka in both diffs.

the torsen is about the best lsd you can get.
auto lockers are ok, but a bit of a pain around town at times. i wouldn't recommend one if you carry rear passengers a lot.

thanks for the help guys, it sounds like the lokka is a good option. i dont use it much and im never in the back :D putting it in the front is a good idea but will this affect off road traction? I already have manual hubs but if its going to work better in the back id rather do that.

just to point it out, with your Surf the front diff and rear diff are different sizes and take a different lokka model. the one on trade me you linked to will only fit the rear of your surf.

With hubs unlocked and in 2wd you wont notice one in the front. In 4wd front lockers make steering heavy on firm ground.
I have Lokka's in the front and rear diffs of my LN106, the rear is not that bad, until your in town touring sharp corners at low speed, clunk clunk bang…. but nothing breaks.

In the ideal world I would have a Lokka in the rear and elocker (selectable) in the front.

With my front and rear Lokka's I spend a lot more time off road in 2wd

btw the trademe link is the wrong locker. you will need the v6 diff locker. (theres two different rear diffs and two lockers to match).
4wdstuff will sort you out :)

He has a KZN diesel surf not a VZN one, or have I missed something?

the turbo diesels and v6 petrol models use the "v6" 4 spider diff. the 4cyl petrols (3y 22r) often use the "4cyl" 2 spider diff.
i think some of the sfa surfs also came with 2 spider rear diff.

it is a diesel and the code on the plate says g294 which i believe is a 4 spider open.

i have emailed 4wd systems but ill email 4wdstuff tomorrow, i think this is the right one...

ended up getting the lokka from 4wdsystems in oz went in without any major hassles and seems to work fine, its in the front and when its in 4wd its awsome. thanks for the help everyone.

I agree with you 100% that we should support local, in this case an ORE member and fellow kiwi. However, when the price difference is nearly $200, it makes that choice very difficult one to make. That is quite the premium to be charging to be a middleman.
