Postby GotFlex » Fri Jun 12, 2009 12:10 pm

Hey guys
I want a non biased opinions as to how to stiffen up my truck, at the moment im running hilux rears up front (4 leafs no loads) and monroe commy shocks in the front and standard mu leaf and repositioned mu shocks in the rear, with soa,
Im looking at ranchos to stiffen up, but i also no that its the leaf spring might be too springy...

i want it better on the road and want to spend my money wisely

Any help appreciated

change your shocks to adjustable ones or put dual shocks on the front maybe
doesn't play well with small vehicles

Hey Jesse, if it's for the MU you should put some Viagra in the fuel tank that will harden it up for ya. , is it all certed yet?. Cheers Tony

Is it a problem with rebound or compression. Is it ride hieght, spring rate or is that the shocks just have the wrong valving or are stuffed.

There are several different things you are talking about so need to be specific about the what you are trying to fix.

Sounds like a good set of shocks would be a very good start. And as you have non-standard spring they'll need to be adjustable to tune them. (just forget Rancho's)
Twin shocks work OK but you'd be better off spending the money on one really good shock ie 3" remote canister shock, as ultimately it will last longer than 2 cheap shocks.

You also forgot one critical thing, what is your budget? I can suggest a way of getting everything you want but it would be about $2,500 a corner!
Nissan Terrano coilovers, turboed VH45, Safari axles, and some other stuff.

Don't think Hydro-pneumatic is a go here Darinz somehow :P

Without seeing it in action, I would be looking at the spring rates first. A shock is only designed to rein in spring movement. When you twist this beast up, do the springs invert and distort a fair bit?
You can try adding other leaves (read thicker) to the spring pack to get it right, or look at aftermarket springs that are supposed to be for adding lift (they almost always make a rig ride like it's on rails :D )
Ugly is a state of mind..... and the state of my truck!

Yea the front leaves invert like mad
It drives ok, but it has a top heavy feel, (wobble)
and when coming out of a decent driveway it sways hard out, i threw my mates ranchos in on hard ( 9000xl) felt way better!!
But still to soft, plus the ride hide was lower on the drivers side so had to add a leaf to drivers front and left to gain heaight back, can this have effect on how the leafs work? iv spent a bit on her now but cant stop, I dont want to spend more than $1000, $1500 worst case,

Another thing on alignment, Iv talked to many guys and some rekon running the wheels with them pointing out wards and other saying inwards, (adjust the draglink so it pulls the wheels in and out) for lifted trucks
What have you guys done?

 with 10" travel at the shocks you are limited on shock choice and if you want to stiffen up the springs you are going to loose the travel

If you want better road manors put a second leaf out of a standard hilux into the front pack's... this will stiffen it up alot and remove travel then go to a stiffer shock, at a guess this will remove a couple of inches travel tho

Out back you have spare leave's from the dona truck, but thats already quite stiff

You could try a sway bar but I don't know how that will go, this will change your oversteer/understeer and with it being so high will make it harder to sort

When you aelerate the wheels spread apart so if they are already pointing out you will start to notice wear on the inside edges. Wheel aligment is a precise science don't f**K about with it. Speedway only going left different setups for different length tracks

hey i had the same kinda problem with my yn60 surf felt like it was going to roll over in corners going fast (well for a 4x4). my rears were sagging so i put some lux ones with more leafs in think it was one more thick leaf. i took my old rear leafs and took one of the leafs out and did an add-a-leaf to the front (well home made add-a-leaf) also put monroe commy gas shocks up front and it runs heeps better. the boys in the states (which is were im originally from) do the add-a-leaf its a cheap easy way to stiffin up the suspension as well as you get a little lift from it to. its also a way to get rid of the sag specially in the front.

just what i have done and has made the road manners way better i can now hold corners well as much as you can in a 4x4 but much better than when i first picked it up.
