PUTTING OVERDRIVE GEARS IN R150f GEARBOX

Postby callumb » Thu Sep 22, 2011 4:55 pm

Recently viewd some websites shedding buggerall light on how to put a higher overdrive gear From an R452 gearbox into a R150 gearbox. thought it would be straight forward
Bought gears from Amayama.com with the help of a website telling me the "correct" model data for a r452 5th gear

so i get these gears and i strip my r150f box out of a surf

gears are diffrent.

anyone done this and maybe can point me in the right direction?

know of any? Bit limited around invercargill. Have changed diff ratios, but donot want to change anymore. Just want a higher top gear. Last ditch wil be getting an r154 for big money out of a supra, puting a 30mm adapter plate in the belhousing and whacking on transfer. Surly there must be a cheap strong option. R150f is mated to holden v6. Reving 2 high at open road speed. Can comfortly sit in 5th gear at 50ks not saying i want that sortv overdrive, bv a bit more to ease the fuel bill

haven't done it but am looking at doing it in the future,my advice would be to take original gear to a machine shop and get them to make up a gear to the ratio you want that then matched the original sizes etc, although you wont get to use the gear you brought it'll get the job done especially with your box already apart

There are a number of good gearbox shops in Invercargill Callum, Transcare on spey or yarrow, (can't remember which) would be a good place to start.

what diff ratios are you running? Bloody sight cheaper (and stronger) to go up in diff ratios I would have thought.

ive run into the same problem.
i have a r150 from a 94 surf which has the nut on the end of the shaft not the circlip. standard fifth gear teeth counts are 26t & 46t dyna gears are 23 & 49.
i ordered dyna 5th gears from amayama, part numbers 33336-25030 (on mainshaft) and 33046-25030 (on countershaft)
the main gear fits but the counter gear doesnt. ive found more part numbers for the counter gear and think 33046-25011 is the one i need but amayama cant supply it.
it seems 25010, 25011,25012 are all the same counter gear for pre 1995 & 25020 & 25030 are for 1995+.
im trying to find a supplier has anybody acompished this mod yet?

Not sure if anyone trying to do this gear swap has seen the articles I have put up on various other forums. After searching on a part number that was mentioned on another forum by someone that was also having trouble fitting the dyna gear to an r series box with the nut rather than the circlip I found this thread. It had some great info on the new part number that could be the one to solve the problem.
I copied the info in the post above into my various posts and thought I would sing up here and add links to the posts I have created so that if any of the other posts find an answer you guys can find out too.

Below are the three posts I have created that contain useful info on the R series Dyna 5th swap. I have managed to do the swap on my later model R series (with the circlip)
The original post was in 4wd action AU where I documented what I did
http://www.4wdaction.com.au/forum/viewtopic.php?f=72&t=156994

A duplicate of the 4wd action I put on Pirate4x4 - this is useful as the guys in the US seem to have access to many Toyota parts dealers so might be able to find parts not available elsewhere.

Another post on the MarlinCrawler site I responed to since it pretty much started the idea for me
