Diff Head Clearance Heights
As the title eludes to, this is a place where you can put the diff head clearance height measurements in.
I'm not sure if its on here somewhere else, but its something I've been meaning to do for a while now, so I went to my lockup and measured the suzuki and then back at home I measured the 80.
What it basically will tell you is measurement from the bottom of the diff head to the nice level floor you are hopefully parked on.
I have been meaning to do this due to constantly reading about how a suzuki on 31s has more clearance than a safari on 35s, so heres my 2 vehicles and hopefully you guys can add plenty more.
Toyota 80 Series Landcruiser on 35/12.5R15 Mudstars @ 25psi 255mm
Suzuki 410 on 30/9.50R15 Kumho 834 @ 8psi 215mm
if you decide to add your vehicle to here, then please do it as above, with vehicle, size and type of tyre and the height measurement
cheers guys
SKID
p.s. the next time I have my 35" creepies on the 80 I will measure as well

Re: Diff Head Clearance Heights
could be a handy thread but an issue i can foresee is the varying weight of vehicles, with add ons etc, which would ultimately effect the bagging of tyres therefore the diff height clearance...? may only be slight, but still...
in a nutshell, too many variables..?
mumbling over... as you were..

Re: Diff Head Clearance Heights
yep too many variables, but we get an indication.
yn67 single cab hilux tied down on trailer.
shaved diffs wearing 35/11.5/15 silverstones measure 33... with 10 psi in them at the moment even less.
285 back and front
guessing if I put 15 psi in tyres and cracked the tie downs she would be 300 easy
might do it again when I take it off trailer

Re: Diff Head Clearance Heights
A more usefull measurement would be the distance from the centre of the axle to the bottom of the diff head housing...this way the height of different brand tyres etc is eliminated.
94 Surf KZN130-W (8inch diff)
Ground to centre of axle 375mm
Ground to bottom of diff head housing 240mm
(375-240=135)
Giving a distance of 135mm from centre of axle to bottom of diff housing.
If i decide to put on a bigger tyre i can now work out how much diff clearance i will have.
EG 850mm tyre ( 850mm /2 ) -135 mm = 290 mm clearance.

Not quite.... The distance from the ground to the bottom of the rim (and therefore the axle) will be different from the top of the tyre to the top of the rim/axle because of the bulge in the tyre at the bottom which is why different tyre psi changes the clearance. The bulge is not only dependent on the psi but also on the weight of the truck....
These measurements are interesting but very subjective.

........but also what ultimately counts when your offroad.
It's that precious clearance between the ground and the diff head that counts. Especially in ruts.
I have found reading the thread interesting, as I now know that if I am following some one in a safari on 35's at 15psi, if I leave mine up at 25/30 psi I should have about the same if not more clearance
