raw shock issues only 1000km old - SORTED

Postby jonossiksilvia » Sat Feb 16, 2013 3:25 pm

so today i went for a wof. truck up on hoist and as the load started to come off the suspension all of a sudden a loud hissing sound happened lasted 10secs tops. anyway once got truck right into the air, the shock that made the sound ended up looking like this?
Image
Image

other side same axle looked like how the shock should at max extension.

so then we lowered the truck and what a battle to get the shock siding back inside the other piece. 20mins latter and lots of hoist movements latter it was in.

so we down the high tech bounce test and what do you know right side normal left side was like no shock was there.

went to place that done the sas swap and he said "take shock out and ill see what i can do". I then told him that the shocks are 23 months old BUT the truck has only done 1200kms since they were fitted (have prove). He then said "wont be covered by warranty because of age"

Got shock out ready to take to him on monday to get it looked at. inner shock comes out completely from outer (2 peices) and no dampening at all!

What would have caused this?
Where do i stand if shop wont replace the shock free?

So annoyed as was hoping to go on the open day trip 2moro but cant go now

cheers john

hope its only a faulty shock and not a dodgy sas swap buy the workshop cos i dont wanna use him again if is down to the sas. was only option at time with the earthquakes

the only way it could be a sas thing is if the mounting points for the top and bottom bend the shock. which is quite unlikely.

maybe some pics of where the shock mounts etc too would be handy for someone to shead some light?

I had the rear Raw shocks fail on my safari after only a short time, supplier off tradme in christchurch, replaced free after a few grumbles. Was a few years ago, so can't really remeber details, think they are still going, gave them to mate when I rebuilt my truck, went EFS extreme in the front, coil overs rear.

Do you know if your shocks have enough extension to match the wheel travel? They should have as it recently passed cert and this should have been checked, but if the shock is being maxed out it have pulled the shock apart?

the shocks were sweet for cert. sas coils and shocks were all fitted by the workshop at same time so i would hope they measured them up right.

cheers

I was sold "EFS" springs from a "reputable" company up here and a year later they were sagging heaps. Went back with invoice and I get the we don't keep our invoices that long and EFS couldn't I.D my springs cos the turn count and thickness didn't match anything in the catalogue and was told it was likely I was sold some other brand. It wasn't worth the hassle pursuing it but I got a big mouth and theres no advertising like bad advertising

Hope you have better luck with your snarl up than I did.
When I was suspension shopping I'd read that some people have good runs from raw but there is quite a few that have shocks failing prematurely. Maybe quality control but could also be incorrect measuring and maybe bumpstops weren't checked and they were damaged under compression previous to your problems..... or you got the close enough is good enough shock?

Basically 2 things could have gone wrong, either the nut on the end of the shaft has come off, which is an assembly problem (not all of them are staked) or it's broken from over-extension (very rare a shock bottoms the piston before it runs out of shaft travel). If you pull it out and pull the shaft out (or did you notice when it came out) it'll either have the thread on the end or not. If it still has the thread it'll be a warranty claim no worries, but if it's broken I think you'll be in for a fight. They'll want to know if it's a stock application for a start, which will probably kill any chance of a claim off the manufacturer right there.
Best bet is the guy who did the job IF he supplied everything.
Good luck.

cheers guys

yes thread was still on the shaft and in excellent condition as far as i could see

yeah im a little worried as it is modded truck and here them saying it now, but thats why i paid a workshop to do the whole suspension setup so it was all working together properly.

sas swap, 4 shocks and 4 coils all fitted $5000

way i see it is
faulty shock - supplier for workshop pays
incorrect shock for application - workshop pays and fixes what he done wrong

Should be no question then. :D Modded or not shouldn't matter in this case.

from the photo there appears to be no evidence of the nut "stripping" off the end of the shaft which could indicate heavy loading, that is a manufacturing fault where the nut is not loctited or staked, would have to say "not of merchantable quality"

It certainly doers not appear to be fit for purpose and I would think that the average person would expect the shocks to last longer than 1200kms

Smart shop just change one pissed off customer to a now happy client who is going to tell eveyone about his experience and is more than likely to go back to them again, good outcome for both
