I'd be looking for more than 5mm. Think of the bushes compressing when you run in to a verticle steep. (Assuming it's coil sprung?)

Can you just cut the spline a little shorter to gain some clearance?

Not sure if this affects your model but in the later 70 series (Playdoh)
There is a difference in length of drive shafts between the auto and the manual boxes.
From memory the manual box is longer and causes the transfercase to sit back a bit further than the auto. So its front shaft is longer and the rear is shorter... by about 80 to 100mm... And thats about the length you seem to have lost...
Or the other way around
Just a thought....

Thanks for that I think the tube would need to be cut down as the two collers meet.

Yeah I wondered if that might be the case.
I had a hilux one that I gained about 15-20mm of slip by only cutting the male spline.

The local drive shaft manufacturer uses this formula.Measure from flange to flange and your drive shaft wants to be 30mm shorter than this measurement fully pushed in on slip spline.
