Yip Chris, my Dad''s done it. It has to fit into your carry on luggage, and remember it's quite heavy.

If you can carry it 8) and it fits under a seat you'll get away with it .... i brought 38kg's of climbing gear back as my hand luggage... raised a few eyebrows when I went through the Xray

Let us know how you go

Yeah claiming the GST back - that's the whole idea.
Have a look on the net, there are a few sites which list the prices that I have seen before. Sorry don't have them with me in AKL.

Rotazuk, you may want to check out this site

http://www.customs.govt.nz

look in the importer link then go to private importer. i looked at getting some suspension parts from Aus a while ago and checked it out with our shipper, the deal was if it was made in Aus, then NZ has a free trade deal and no duty and i think no GST applies, otherwise you will have to pay if it is worth over NZ$700, less than $700 you can bring it in duty and GST free, i did this just last week with some parts from the US.

when i was looking at suspension, by the time you added on 10% duty and 12.5% GST it wasn't worth it. but i was also having to pay for shipping.

If you want to claim the GST at the airport the goods have to be in your hand luggage, not checked in. bastards nearly got me that way once.
