Wtd 600mm shocks

Postby Dirtydog » Sun Jul 14, 2013 4:29 pm

Hey guys looking for some shocks for my terrano,

Need some safari shocks (pin to pin) with an extended length of over 600mm.

Compressed length around 300mm would be good.

At this point looking for second hand unless there are some good ones that are nice to the wallet.

Those measurements wont be that easy to accommodate. Basically you are wanting 300mm travel out of a shock that has a compressed length of 300mm?

Could probably go with less compression but would bottom out thats the only problem.

i think the maximum i could go would be 350mm compressed.

got the measurement wrong, 400mm is the compressed length.

Also you could do the (easy) mod of bolting some spacers into your sock towers, this will increase your minimum compressed length.

If your a bit flexible with the length, well it sounds like you are!

Try your local BNT or Repco for there end of lines or non stock randoms.
I got 4 mis matched shocks for a box of piss. and then when I bend one, I go back and they are happy to flick me another.
Dont follow me. i'll get stuck and need a tow..

Might give them a try but would prefer something second hand to start with.

check out www.my4by.com you will be very hard pressed to find shocks of that length in nz. and if you do you will pay through the nose and some out your ass! rears for my surf measured out 660 extened 440 compressed, got a mate who lives in Washington who picked up and delivered for me, price for the pair from the us including exchange rate and freight was $210 if you can wait two weeks for shipment!!

I know you are looking second hand but this is a good length given what you asked for. Do a little more than the 10 seconds of research I did and then you can ask for specific shocks. Remembering that the valving is all important.

I would suggest from what I found a 50 - 100mm lifted landcruiser 80 shock could be a start
Toy - Zuk chassis tub, hilux 4.88 axles and transfer, Nissan CA18DE motor and auto trans, sc12 supercharger, 32 10'5 simex, twin motor 8274 custom freespool. Well the parts are all there in various corners of the shed

dont mind waiting for shipping,

Is it worth making up some sort of pin to eye adapter?

Cant find any that long that are pins either end.

How did you measure for shocks? Did you just measure full droop to compression? Or did you flex test it with no shocks in it?
Didn't barbie drive a jeep??

Seeing as ypu've got a safari front put some standard 80 series shocks in. They will out strech the safari suspension easily. You will need to extend the shock towers which is ridiculously easy to do and by the looks of it you,ve got the room.
Fyi i run 80 series springs and shocks in my safari. With 65 mm longer towers the bump stops fully compress before shock bottoms out and suspension binds up before they top out .

It looks like if i want to get some decent flex with shocks i will need to do something with the current setup anyway,

So it looks like i will be either making higher shock towers and looking at changing one pin to an eye, or both.

i think it will be as simple as getting some flat bar and bending to suit size of shock then drilling a hole through the bottom and putting a bolt through it.

Easy,

Ide be pretty careful as to get the valving right.....if you get it wrong you will end up with a truck that rides like a lowered honda, not cool. Have you looked at summit racing in the states? They have heaps of shock options complete with measurements. Reason I say this is I am going through the same issues with my SAS surf. My old surf (also SAS) ended up being really stiff on the road and when you have 10 inches of travel it shouldnt be like that at all. I see there are some old man emu shocks on TM that may suit. Anyway its reasonably important to get the shock thing right as it has the ability to make you dislike driving the vehicle. Do it once and do it right. If all else fails get some adjustable ones (Ranchos?) and you should be ok.
