project cj 4a jeep
Re: project cj 4a jeep
well truned her around this morn whiped the wheel off to adj bearing and the nut that holds the flange on was loose (very unlike the previous careful lady owner only used to go to church on a sunday but the son drove it during the week!) whipped that off and low and behold the bl*&^dy thing was cracked on the taper, pulled out the spare cleaned it up and fitted it now no wobble so all good
nice day and all took for a little drive round the local roads did grand total of 6 kms things i found
waste of time with the stero can't hear it
a bit wandery on the road
must remember that no sycro on first gear, big sticker doesn't help
got lots of looks but when mr plod looked at me time to go home me thinks! wof and reg but who needs the hassle
still have to check over most bolts to make sure they are tight but felt ok and what a rush after all the work done and the exhaust pipe has slightly greyed up so here hoping I won't have to pull the motor apart just yet

Re: project cj 4a jeep
been a while but have done a couple of things started on exhaust stack, made centre console, ready to bolt down tool box and fit air compressor
but she died again in the drive so this morning after mucking around for a week I ripped off her head a bit of carbon build up but not too bad very small lip in the bore so will order new rings, head, tappet cover gasket this week then put back together with a quick hone and that will hopefully stop the smoke and fouling the plugs and might run properly !!! till get motivated to rebuild the orignal engine
heres a couple of pic's
any thoughts?
will throw up on petrol mod as well
till next time

Re: project cj 4a jeep
well heads stripped, cleaned and ready for a quick lap and reassemble
have just popped pistons out am NOT looking at crank bearing too hard (they look worn) so hopefully tomorrow will lap in valves and might start honing the bores havn't seen my parts from aussie yet but good things take time, have come to the conclusion this engine has never been apart so hoping this will cure the problems
have recived my rebuild kit for the webber and a blank adaptor plate so have that to carry on with if all else fails
onward and upward

Re: project cj 4a jeep
Is that the one that was in it when you got it?
I don't think the bottom end had been looked at. But it was taken out and sat in the shed for 8 years as it was smokey.
We then dropped it back in the Jeep to get it mobile as the one we rebuilt 8 years earlier got smokey and wasn't worth rebuilding again.
After 8 years sitting in the shed it just fired straight into life.

hi Glen yep that's the one I got with her and the bottom end hasn't been looked at still and I'm not looking at it!! this motor was out of the green jeep wasn't it?
what they eye doesn't see the mind doesn't worry about
this is a bog job then I better get rebuilding the original engine
had the neighbour over this arvo and he informed me that he can custom manf a spacer block/adaptor at work for me as they have all the toys there,so if my adaptor plate doesn't line up he has a job to do
so this weeks job list grow and am at mud plug next sat so already a day behind I want to enter the sheffield one so have a finish date!!!!!

well basicly back together head on rocker gear on sump on oil in all bolts I can find done up, weber carb loosely bolted on trying to get linkages right new plugs sitting on bench hoping sat morn to redo the tappet clearances quick check and kick her in the guts, might be old carb at his stage as need to get going as sheffeild comming up and want my harness's in for that, onboard air would be nice too plus a few of those "little" jobs that never get finshed
Re: project cj 4a jeep

have also fitted compressor ,plug at back of cab for spotlghting/running fridge etc looking forward to sheffeild and then work out most/some of the kinks I hope

Oils cheap, just keep pouring it in the top. I put over 2l of auto trans fluid in my zuk at Manukau W/C, although I think the water helped the level a bit too
Toy - Zuk chassis tub, hilux 4.88 axles and transfer, Nissan CA18DE motor and auto trans, sc12 supercharger, 32 10'5 simex, twin motor 8274 custom freespool. Well the parts are all there in various corners of the shed
Re: project cj 4a jeep
oil's cheap but can't afford to blow it up the rebuild would kill me,well the missus would anyway
Re: project cj 4a jeep
well all done carb on and it runs very smothly hoping for little run on saturday but the oil is still leaking from bell housing while going, will try a bit longer to make sure
I hate doing jobs twice assuming i ain't missed something
till next time

Re: project cj 4a jeep
put some borrow rim spacers on today and went for a wee drive to the hill a couple of doors down to check gap between trye and chassis, springs etc just slight rubbing at 8mmon hard lock so 15mm offset increase will do and about a 13 mtr turning circle

and the Exon Valdezs award is mine still almost solid trickle of oil down the road and then up the drive into the garage bugger out with the degreaser and broom looks a little better ,I hate shared driveways!!!!
does seem to run nicer with the newer carb ust need fine tuning now but will have to wait for the rear main to be done................ again
till next time

Re: project cj 4a jeep
sweet bout 100 new views since last up date
have been mucking round with the wiring .................... again! now have new extra fuse box in but still have to tidy up some wires
it works the, reverse light, roof lights, 12 plug for fridge/spot lights etc, on board air compressor
the revised plan is to put 50 amp relay in line thru the acc switch so when the keys off nothings powered up
winch attached and wire on needs replaced but 6mm dia??
think I can fit 20 mtr on
tool box bolted on to deck
got to mod air inlet again made little error on inlet placement
still moving forward
