Hilux IFS elimination.

Postby wisard2 » Mon Apr 13, 2009 8:15 pm

Finally made a start today on ripping all the IFS out of my LN107 Hilux and converting over to solid differential and leaf springs. Will continue tomorrow.

Am also completely rebuilding the front diff before it is installed.

Because I am doing it outside, the car ramps are more stable then my axle stands as they don't sink into the ground and are a lot wider and stable.

I bought most of the stuff from Jafa for the conversion, plus rear greaseable shackles and bushes from 4wdbits, maxi track front springs with a 2" lift from Dace (Repco), front diff from Simon in Tokamaru, and knuckle rebuild kits off TM.

Still have rear springs to buy off Dace and full set of shocks, once I know how much lift the back will need to level it all out, and extended & compressed lengths for new shocks.

Plus I am going to move the front diff forward 30mm to ease the chopping of guards when I fit the 33's.

looks good , I see you are going to go high steer . for that you do not need the bracket on the top of the axle houseing as its for the old push pull steering , I would cut it off before you throw the diff in and paint it 8) 8) 8)

Yeah Cole, didn't get stuff all done today. First of all I had visitors for a good part of the day, then when they had gone and I made a start back on it, the f*#king oxy ran out so I had to make a mad dash over to BOC in Palmy to get a new one before they shut. But did finally manage to get all the IFS brackets gassed off, and ready to start the big clean up tomorrow with the grinder.

What a lovely day! A 230mm grinder to get all the larger, easier places, then a smaller 115 grinder to get into all those pre-named places  .

Hard, heavy & hot, burny type work, but all done.

Got plates welded over engine mounts, and rear hanger tubes into chassis. Just got the front cross member to weld in tomorrow....a bit easier welding to get at (thank Christ!!).

No apology for this post, If that is your , I won't call it welding, way of sticking metal together, stop right now because it might be me you kill. I am all for people doing there own mods but some things should be left to there right full trades. By all means tack it together and then get a welder to finish it off .

Hey Ryan, Lookin good
From when I did it just check the shackle angle before you weld the front crossmember in as by the dimensions trail gear gave me for mine it was wrong and the shakle geometry would have been all wrong. But yeah looks good and it has the right badge on it this time

Yea x2 coming form a welder , you should tack it up and get a person that can weld mint to buzz it up , not trying to pick holes in your work as you are doing a good job but you may have trouble getting cert if the rest is welded like that

im gona have to x3 that one mate, uve done an awsum job so far and your truck will be great at the end but as someone who welds every day of the week those welds will not hold up,as said tack it together and get a welder in,from all the stuff ive seen try get through certs its this sort of stuff that gets pulled up all the time,so youll be adding in extra work for yourself later having to regrind it all, hopefully you wont be offended as were just trying to help you build the best truck u can

If you want we can drag Taz01 and a welder up to do the welding if you want... he is a ticketed welder which the cert guy may require......
