ls1 80 series

Postby cool__bananas » Thu Nov 19, 2009 9:34 pm

hi all, its time i started my new project for three reasons, not much is hapenning with our v8 nissan so thats boring, the current motor in the cruiser is stuffed and i have finished my school exams for the year. So here we go, it is a 1997 80 series landcruiser that has/had the 4.5L petrol inline-6 (1FZ-FE), it has done just short of 300,000km and is pretty gutles and thirsty as a tow wagon (24L/100km without a trailer driving slow). Heres what i did this afternoon... the motor should be out by tomorow night.

right, ive dont more :) on friday i pulled the motor out and sorted that out, then saturday i went 4x4ing and on sunday i striped both autos of their motors, heres what i got...

these are just pics of the 1fze auto (cruiser motor)
Image

Image

Image

and then today i started rebuilding things that ive been meaning to do for ages while the gearbox is being adapted...

heres it my new discs on the back :) i slotted them all at my afterschool work on the mill, mean as
Image

a bit of hub bling
Image

and done and back together
Image

pulled the front apart, the left side had a leaky axle seal so i though whilst it is off the road i moswell rebuild everything so i dont have to do any work on it for a while, i am doing full on hubs rebuild

heres what ive dont within the last week. finished putting the front together (this included full on new wheel bearings, seals everywhere, gaskets, kingpin bearings etc etc), changed the back left brakes and thas pretty much it haha but the gbox is all done now so i sat it in the truck to see how it fits and its a fail :( i have to move the gearbox xmember forward 150mm, get a rear sump off a camaro, late model commodore or a 4x4 chev truck. and it may have to be lifted and bumpstop height changed to stop the diff smashing the motor. but heres the pics of whats been done reccently...

the front brakes all done
Image

the black bit inbetween the transfer case and the gbox is factory on the back of the cruiser auto and i thought id use it so i didnt have to make a new xmember and also it means the shaft out of the auto is pretty much fully factory.
Image

Image

Image

the sump of the auto had to be cut and changed to allow the driveshaft to pass it, and a smaller UJ has to go on the front otherwise it would be making some pretty big dents in the side of the auto haha
Image

Image

here is the auto mounted to the existiong xmember, as you can see the bell housing mounts way to far inside the firewall as the back of the ls1 is very busy, the right head and intake manifolf etc are flush with the belhousing
Image

Image

just out of curiousity, is anyone reading this? if not i wont bother posting :)

I find these threads are a lot better when we don't have to sift through a large amount of posts to get to the good stuff, so thats the only reason I never commented

ok, no more talk then haha well today i got the gearbox moved to come to another problem :( i hate this allready. i turned the gearbox xmember around 180 horozontaliy so to of the bolt holes would allready line up and it moved it forward the width of the xmember which was 145mm which is all good. so that was done but now i have realised for my engine to clear the front suspension a half decent amount the gearbox had to point up big time on the piss which is pretty bad cause of driveshafts and the transfer case was hanging down big time, so tomorow i have to sort my dads truck our at the dyno and then space my gearbox up 2" which will also need the use of a BFH (Big f hammer :) )

here is where i cut 10mm of the radius arm mount to help the turned around xmember clear
before
Image

after
Image

Image

then i also had to cut a bit off the xmember
Image

Image

Image

so with that done i realised that the gearbox mount was offset 50mm to the left side and because i turned the xmember around it would have been 100mm out of place so i redrilled the holes
Image

Image

Image

so with that done i bolted up what i could with the existing mounts and then got a really big peace of angle iron i hold the other 4 bolts
Image

Image

Image

Image

so with that all done the gearbox has moved forward about 145mm which should be enough to clear the firewall without to much panel work
Image

but here is how far the transfer stuck down with the belhousing the correct height
Image

but the other problem with lifting the auto up is part of the transfer will hit the tunnel
Image

and here is how much room i have for the shifter thing so i think i will convert it to a cable rather than stick
Image

but i do have alot of room to go up :)

Hi Mitch,

Cool project, impressed with the work for someone still at school.

Just a suggestion with your thread, perhaps you could do the same as Wopass did and just keep adding to your first post and just date the start of each post. That way people can still comment but don't have to wade through pages and pages to see the whole build. Obviously from the number of views there are alot of interested people.

Keep up the great work and showing us oldies there is still hope for the youth of today.

Thanks
Tim

well ive done a few things this week but i thought id wait untill now to post them up, i have lifted the gearbox up 40mm which invlolved beating the gbox tunnel in about 10mm and thats about it, made and mounted the motor mounts and started the turbo manifolds.

new gearbox spacer

this is the first attempt, i tried 60mm to start with which was waaaay too much, i dont know what i was thinking when i measured it.
Image

Image

here i cut 20mm out of it

Image

Image

heres the left hand side, it shows how much room i have to put the shifter rod :?

Image

and this is the part i beat in a bit for the trasfer case

Image

the right hand side of the motor

Image

Image

here the alternator clears the chassis by about 15mm and when the motor tourques up it will lift up and away so that gap is all good

Image

this was how close the a/c pump was but i have put a 10mm peice of plate to space the box across

Image

Image

so here it is sitting in there all nice and ready for mounts

Image

right hand side mount nearly done and tacked up

Image

all ready to go

Image

left hand engine mount

Image

left engine mount all bolted on
Image

right engine mount bolted on

so here is the engine all mounted and ready to rock

Image

here is the throttle, all i had to do to make the existing cable work was turn the braket around and cut a bit out for that pipe, all the leverage is the correct amount so that makes it easy

Image

here is the exhaust and turbo flanges all cut out ready to be put together

ImageImage

Image

Image

Image

Image

all welded

Image

Image so now tthe right hand side is all welded ive gotta wrape it all up tight in heat wrap stuff to keep the heat out.
