2jz Hilux. cont'd..?

Postby jaslux » Thu Feb 18, 2010 10:01 pm

Hi all

Well i thought i might start a build thread for my hilux as now done a few things to it, and had some decent seat time and can now call it my own...

I got it in may 09,
It used to be another ORE members (Philux's) and heres its build thread http://www.offroadexpress.co.nz/Forums/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=7160

Anyway heres some pics of when i got it

Image

Image

Image

First decent mud... :D :D :D

Image

Image

Mods it already had

-2jz
-Duals (4.7 gears)
-4.8 diffs
-Wide rear axle
-Auto locker rear
-Lsd front
-Rears up front
-Crossover/histeer setup
-37" Creepys on 15x10 cragars
-Snorkel/front and rear bars etc

P.S: I used Transpro car transporters to bring it up from Christchurch and recommend never to use them...
It took over two weeks to arrive, went to auckland for a weekend and back (im near whakatane) had to pay more than quoted price (after pickup), got damaged on the way (bonnet flew up after some clown must have undone bonnet pins, company blamed it on high winds... ) and the main guy Shahil had no clue about anything, didnt have any answers whenever i rang...

Rant over haha

What ive done

Moved radiator to rear,

Image

Used 32mm (purple stained  ) stainless pipe, duplex grade which is apparently stupidly strong.
And a few bends i managed to find/borrow and buy. Also got 2m of some flexi rad hose off trademe which worked really well was impressed with quality of it.
Had to make brackets out of some threaded galv steel as they all varied in length and bolted up through floor...

Runs along top chassis rail in front,

Image

Image

Image

Under passenger side floor...

Image

Image

Over x-member under rear seat... Had to cut and reshape floor inside cab (no pic yet)

Image

Toward rear then up through tray...

Image

Image

It holds about 12litres of coolant
Had an air lock at first but took top outlet pipe off at engine filled it up and was away.
Has only got hot once since (about 5months) but had slight airlock again and needed more fluid.
So all in all very happy with it, used to get hot at slow speeds now stays at constant temp and also made way for winch :D

Image

Image

Image

Its an old Warn M8000. got it for $500 so cant complain.
Didnt want winch hanging off, getting in way and reducing approach angle so made custom mount to slip over spring hanger and fairlead nicely flush with bars. Control box mounted up and accessed through grill

Few more pics (gotta love em  )

Green 'lux is mates has 1uz lift 35"s etc

Image

Image

Big ruts!!!

Image

Image

Heres the old mans LN106 was standard until i got mine  :D

Image

Anyway thats enough for now will try keep updated...
Doin rear disk conversion atm

Yea thanks, goes well
It came with new solid front rotors and galant calipers brackets in the pile of spares. So decided to go that route instaed of prado/mr2. Got calipers from '89 E33a galant and getting axles machined down today hope fully put it together next week

So your motor stays cool enough on the open road? Have you done any long road trips since putting the radiator on the rear?

Done over half hour drives open road in it, relatively flat but doesnt change temp at all. Its around 150mm away from rear window tho.

Apparently heaps more airflow if i lifted it a little (had someone riding on the back once :? )

Heres a pic of my sump which i had slightly modified, after dropping off a ledge a little too quick which caused the diff to come up and peirce a hole in it...

Image

The sump was all scratched up and dented so it had obviously been happening for quite a while.
Its only removed around 200ml max of the capacity of the sump so im assuming it hasnt made too much difference with keeping things oiled up top.
Also installed an oil pressure gauge to keep an eye on things.

Got my axles done over the weekend
Here they were before

Image

They had to be heated and pressed/cold chiseled to remove the retainer ring thing that holds in the bearing...
Had about 5mm taken off the outside edge of mounting face and about 5mm taken off inside hole on the rotors

Image

Image

And heres a pic of brackets and calipers il hopefully be using if it all works out

Image

The rotors need maching down for calipers to fit over, as theyre too thick so will hopefully get that done this week

Oh and the only reason i decided to go ahead with doin brakes is coz i had taken rear diff apart to fix this...

Image

Its the main carrier pin thing that holds the locker in  :!:
got no idea how or why it broke...

It made a couple of bangs then a knock knock knock as i drove down the rd slowly. Took it apart and the knocking was the short part sliding and hitting the crown wheel as it rotated

Image

Which in turn munched the end of the pinion and made a few big chips on a few teeth

Image

Image

So replaced pinion, crown wheel looked alright :? thankfully and hopefully doesnt do anything like that again for a while.

Does anyone happen to know where or who in the eastern b.o.p specialises in diffs? And or lockers??

Noone in whakatane i talked to knew anything so kinda did it myself... :? hopefully doesnt destroy itself once its running again

Crown wheel and pinion should be a matched set only. Wont last very long if you only replace one

Ernie in EBTD club does hilux diff work. Or you can PM Skid - his flatmate does diff deals and navigates for Froggy (also in EBTD club)...

Hmm yea i was wondering that... Have the crown wheel that matches the pinion so maybe i should change that too then.
Thanks for that

wound brake piston in a full turn and rotors now fit nicely :D so doing the other one now and hopefully post some pics later. Also got new rear bearings today so evrythings ready to go back together. Now gotta start thinking about handbrake :? had a look at hosehustlers setup pics so may try something similar. Wanna get it going first, been too long (only a week or so)

Well since last update have replaced crown wheel with the matched one, finished disk conversion, all new rear bearings seals etc, just need to do handbrake now. Started making brackets for it, will be similar ro hosehustlers just a smaller scale, hopefully works. Also managed to kill my camera  must have got too much diff oil on it
Will post some pics at some stage

Future plans

-Front gaurd chop (anyone done this?)
Want to cut/fold them back to the 1st line on gaurd about an inch.
As the tyres kinda hit quite bad and popped one side off...

Image

Figured if i mess it up il get some nice new flared jafa style gaurds from that 4wd fibreglass place. Or those widened ones i think J-Dub was making? Those looked nice and were a good price.

-Also want to do coons in the back eventually
-Sliders
-Sort out storage on tray for recovery gear, spare tyre maybe
-Would love to supercharge the 2jz  sorta highly unneccesary but would be awesome :D

yay new camera, managed to pick this up for much less than retail haha good ol arm twisting...

Image

heres some pics of disk brakes on rear, still gotta do handbrake hopefully get most done this weekend

Image

Image

Image

And heres the bits im gonna use to do handbrake setup
Will u-bolt around axle thru bracket and have the pivoting arm thing through bracket attached to handbrake and caliper. If that makes any sense. Basically changing angle of pull of handbrake by 90'. Hopefully works. nice and simple

Image

Heres pic of truck as current

Image

Approach angle :D

Image

New rub marks from rear wheel after sundays play up manawahe, must have been pretty crossed up coz used to be paint there  and rear leafs are real stiff (cmon coons :D :D )

I looked into turboing it when i had it, was guuna be 5k drive in drive out, had 300 odd nm or torque, that was gunna be doubled and it was gunna have bout 240kw at the rear wheels :D :D :D

How much weight do you normally have in the truck? Remember a standard hilux is designed to have a load in the back and tow a trailer.

Before you look at coon springs pull the bottom 3 leaf's and lengthen the shakles to keep the ride height and see how much of a difference it makes.

I have put in a track bar to stop the axle wrap having done the above and between those two the offroad drivability and ride of the hilux was a lot better.

You will need the track bar with coon's also and they are massively longer and flatter they introduce a lot of axle tramp and you need to change the chassis mounts around.

Just my 2c ;)
Legal disclaimer: Any information I may have provided is worth exactly what you paid me for it.

Yea thanks for that Steve, was intending to put in a track bar for the axle wrap if i was to do rears. And will definately look into doing what you say above. may be alot easier than doing whole coon conversion...
And it doesnt usually have much weight in the back at all and dont tow trailers. (But may be using it next month on 31s to tow mates drift car)
Just hoping to get a bit more movement out of the rear coz theyre real stiff, although any wheel lift doesnt matter too much with the locker. And any onroad improvement would be great

P.S almost sorted handbrake, hurt leg couple weeks ago so havent managed to do much. Will post pics when all done

Cheers

Hi all, bit of an update although not much

Trimmed front gaurds, about 25-30mm more clearance. Still rubs at full flex but is better.
Cut lip back then folded up flat so doesnt cut tyre and could refit flare. Aint pretty but not too bad

Image

Image

Image

Image

Also started sliders,

Image

Image

Not too sure whether they will be removable yet... Otherwise will be welded to plate welded to chassis

Havent sorted handbrake yet got brackets all done just need short cables made up to finish it off.

Heres few wheeling pics from today to keep it less boring

(looks like im goin hard but not really)

hi all,
Bit of an update if anyones interested

Finnally sorted handbrake (needed one for wof, handy motivator)
Original plan worked but didnt have enough leverage so made the pivoting arms longer,

Image

Image

(dont worry, short cables are temporary)

Still wasnt quite enough leverage to pull brake on hard enough so extended the centre handbrake arm underneath...

Image

Now works mint, pulls up on a hill even with the 37s :D

Also finally got round to making radiator shroud, as it used to get hot on long open road climbs as the fans werent drawing enough air through the radiator, came out ok i reckon

Image

And heres a few random pics to show it does get used

Oops...

Been a while!

Got bored so thought id update with bugger all to show

Posted this somewhere else i think but made a perspex scoop for radiator as it would still slowly get hot during long drives

Image

Image

I sticks above roof so catches the air. Before it used to just recirculate the hot air from behind cab. Seems good hasnt been hot since
Also painted it finally, was looking a bit rough...

Before
Image

After
Image

Came up not too bad for a first effort
Apart from maintenance (springs, shackles etc) iv done stuff all to her
Much to do tho, much to do...
Cheers
