I reckon youd be right without an oil cooler, assuming your meaning engine oil, as for trans oil, your can get a decent, cheap kit from repco, and supprisinly they are pretty good.

thanks guys,
its just for engine cooling. i cant go wider than a stock radiator and height wise is bloody near imposible too.
i have googled, lots of phone calls, and PM's on other sites but know one will replie what radiator they are using, and no one can tell me the overall size of a 3rz radiator, only the core size which doesn't help me a great deal when i need to know actual sizes, mainly height wise.
I have tried mocking everything up with a radiator from a 2.8 and that has no show of fitting, width is ok it just the height.

maybe its just christmas and nobody really wants help for a measly
$300+ radiator, i know what shops wont be getting a sale

I had a similar problem quite a few years ago putting a big block 428 V8 into a muscle car. Cured the problem by re coring the radiator with a "big bore race core". Thats what the radiator guy called it. I don't know if it was his own slang for the product or it is a known core type in the auto industry. Might be worth asking a shop about though as it was successful in cooling the big block while retaining the original radiator dimensions.

If you could get a four core put onto your stock hilux radiator I think you would have plenty of cooling.

Just a note that someone pointed out to me, alloy radiators aren't a great idea for 4wd's even though they look so shiney. Repairs are much more difficult, go copper.

Just something to think about, the overall dimensions of a FJ40 radiator which is a four core are roughly 720mm wide x 750mm high x 70mm thick (off the top of my head not exact). They were good for cooling 4.0L donk (same radiator used to cool 3L desiel).

Cheers,

Pete

my engine mounts have been moved back about 65mm, im using a deisel ratiator out of a 79-82 hilux because there better then the petrol and fit in the bay well and i havnt had any issues with over heating, only problem i have had is the fan hitting the radiator i have cut a fins on the fan down a bit so they dont hit but i will be putting thermos on in the future i would recomend doing that. i havnt over heated once and i dont think my radiator is very big maybe just thick.
p.s i have **** all room at the back of the motor and only just clear my ratiator so if you havnt moved your motor back enough you wont fit a thicker core radiator

This has helped me somewhat

thanks, there wont be a turbo in the mix, my main aim is to get it going so i drive it

lifted the body off again tonight and took my new engine mounts off to get some more made to move the engine back a further 20mm so that will be a total of 70mm moved back,
and hopefully no more radiator fitting issues now
so if anyone wants some mint 3rz engine mounts that will move your engine back 50mm give me a pm

Surface Coatings in Tokoroa painted chassis, springs diffs and associated brackets and fittings for me for a lot less than it would cost me in time and money and im am more than happy with the job done :D

just have to:
fit steering from p/s box to the diff.
total rebuild of rear brakes, everything inside the drums has rusted and seized and looks horrible.
remove the disks off the front diff and and get the paint off them
find the front calipers and make sure they dont need rebuild
(or considering putting vented disks on the front with some later model calipers)

things i need:
everything inside the rear drums
some later model calipers and disks
fuel tank

still lots more to do but getting chassis painted has given me more inspiration to work on it again and finally give me the reassurance that one day this may actualy drive down the road

Well the hilux has brakes for the first time in about 4 years
all new pads, shoes, springs and cylinders even the handbrake works,
also fitted gas tank and headlights
Going to refit the engine out of the parts truck just so I can drive it.
It's been to long at least this way it will be running soon and not waiting till if or when we have the money to do it.
Have to replace sump and rocker cover gaskets, needs another oil change.
Fill diffs with oil
Just waiting for my new roof lining to turn up so i can put the windows back in.
Front and rear drive shaft's painted ready for install.
Ordered some new outer tie rods and hopfully here tomorrow so i have steering again.
Engine will be in when truck and engine are in the same place.
Fix and paint flatdeck then refit it.
Getting excited now

Thanks
Sure is, just a tad loud with no exhaust on though.
just need to fit the radiator so i can run it longer than 30secs
(waiting for the bottom hose to turn up, and fit drive shafts)
bodgy up an exhaust then see if everything turns together 8)

oh and some freash gas so it might run a little smoother
