x3! so your going to use a safari box and transfer? are the adapter plates buy able from somewhere? what axle are you using? gonna be coiled?

aparently the safari auto gearbox transfer case fits over, but if not i will be getting one machined up, and its going to have safari front and rear axles, im pulling lsd out of rear terrano one and puting it in front diff, and possibly getting a lokka for rear.

its going to be coils all round, so a nice ride, and easy to lift too.

the only problem is its gunna be 4.1:1 ratio, so slugish on road with big tires, but i might get some gears for the transfer case to change it down a bit.

ill be using the tranfer case from an auto safari hopefully, so insted of having the problem of the driveshaft coming down the left hand side, it will come down the right hand side so i can virtually fit most axles under the front, but im going with safari axles as they are nissan, and they will give me a greater track width, which will be handy for stability both on road and off it.

im really looking foward to this upgrade :)

Hope this helps. The difference between Terrano auto and manuel xfers, is the auto has a 30 input spline, and the manuel is 24. The Terrano auto xfer also has a stronger drive chain assembly. The different input splined gear can be swapped between the two.
Heres a couple of photos of a Safari auto xfer sitting on a Terrano auto. 1st photo showing the top two bolt holes aligned, and 2nd veiw from bottom.

They dont fit by a mile. My concerns are, that if you make an adaptor plate, the splines wont be fully engaged. If your using an auto box, the rear section of the housing could be chopped and turned into an adaptor. If your using a manuel box, I guess the rear of that will need chopping. Just my thoughts

Edit: I've just found out that the stronger auto xfer case I'm refering to is off a V6

i guess im going to be using a auto box as an adapter then, in which case i will need the full auto.

but ive seen in photo's that the safari auto has the transfer case, then in has another section inbetween the t case and the auto itself? are the photo's from there on or are they just the auto transfer by itself?

but it shouldnt be too hard trying to find a complete unit, and just take what i need from it.

I'm not sure what your asking. The photos I've shown are of the Safari xfer, and Terrano auto, no adapters. Maybe there is adaptor housings with adaptor shafts available.
Maybe a Safari box and xfer, adapted to your motor might be easier

Hi dirtydog, just to clear things up in my head, your terrano- is it an automatic trans? Also have you got diesel or v6?

its an auto diesel, td27.

i dont know if the safari box would fit under a terrano, but i havnt really seen the size difference.

i dont know how to explain the auto box with transfer case adapter, but im going off what rick at 4wd accessories has been saying.

It is a cool project but it seems like a lot of work. Why not flick the terrano and buy a patrol or maybe solid ax hilux? It a vehicle weight thing?
I'll be watching with interest too.

i dont like how heavy the landcruisers/safaris are, and i really dont like the bodys either, the safaris are just big and cramped, where as the land cruisers are like a work truck.

i have thought about a hilux but there are alot of them around and i like to feel independant, ive also notice that the hiluxs tend to have less grunt unless they have a turbo on them, but i have seen alot of blown turbo's from toyota's.

i also like nissan, in general, but the things i like most about terrano's is the body, looks the part i guess. and how many people are there in nz with a sas'd terrano compared to sas'd surfs?

Yeah it would be good to see a SAS Terrano which will be something new especially for a Terrano.

Cheers.

Cool project idea, only thing I can see being a problem is that if you want to fit larger tyres is that itll end up being pretty high unless you do a whole heap of cutting. The chassis is pretty flat at the front like most IFS trucks so if you do keep it low itll have bugger all up travel. Just bought one of these d21 sh#tters so will be watching with interest

it will be pretty high anyway, but as high as it will be it will definitly be wider, so should be alright in terms of stability, but im keeping options open to possibly fit 37's, but most likely have just 33's.

yea but i want the width of the safaris and dont really trust chopping something and re welding it, makes the housing only as strong as the weld.

plus it will be easier if i bang up the diff etc i can just put another safari one under it, not have to get it chopped up.

and those jeep ones are dam expensive to replace, 2 safari diffs cost as much as a dana 30, which is as weak as a terrano front diff, and 5 std.

You dont need to chop the housing up, you flip the whole housing round, move the swivel balls an diff head studs to suit
