Re: Filthy Safari
Thanks dude, not 100% on how im going to do it but basically I want it to end up looking something like this:
I havnt planned how to layout the deck yet but I will be going rear mount alloy radiator and decent sized air tank, and plenty of lighting.
Cheers

More progress
Have now finished all the welding on the body bar the tidy up/few spot welds.
Now to tidy up bog, sand, prep and paint the body...
Sealed the roof with Carbond just for reassurance

Re: Filthy Safari
Had a few goodies turn up over the last few weeks, still waiting on a few more things but apparently they are making the boat before they ship them
Spliced up my new 10mm winch rope, hoping it will hold as its only the second splice ive ever done
Got 8 lengths of 44mm rollcage tube and 2 Lengths of 38mm that have been collected also

Re: Filthy Safari
Is that the MANZ 44mm tube? If so, you may wish to see what others think about using it for an exo. Personally I think it's a bit light.
Arron.

Re: Filthy Safari
Yeah I have always though it is a bit small but that's what I got recommended and have seen a few mates run it... As far as I know its 44mm Rollcage tube which would be 2.5mm wall?
Just curious, what would you recommend as a replacement?

Re: Filthy Safari
I did use 44mm southward steel mill EWP roll cage steel for bar work but its dear and to thin , from memory we use 32 nominal bore black pipe which is about 4 or 5 mm wall thickness and is 42.5 ish OD so still works in the bender fine , literally half the price per length and the length is 2 meters longer ,
Re: Filthy Safari
Oh yeah, I considered using schedule 40 or portable fencing pipe but wanted to keep weight down as much as possible, especially with doing a full exo as well as tray and front bar.
Mind you rollcage tube isn't the lightest stuff out for what is it.

Got reaaally itchy with not being able to go out... so gave into temptation and have taken it on a couple of ULR (paper road) trips round my place & also competed in a Fun winch day hosted by Auckland 4wd Club with Datsunsafari as my navi.

Re: Filthy Safari
Progress looks good mate. Are you going to run a internal cage to tie into the exo?
Re: Filthy Safari
Thanks dude. Im quite pleased with the progress so far.
No plans for an internal cage at this stage, will be doing a 6pt exo cage and front bar.
Cheers

Re: Filthy Safari
Cheers mate. Yeah progress is good even when it feels small.
Lighting is a 5m roll of waterproof led strip light was around $35 on trademe. I used 1 piece to do the length of bonnet edge, it stuck ok bit will put a few small spots of glue just to hold it in place when it gets wet.

Re: Filthy Safari
Haha the joys of custom builds aye. to be honest ive only shortened chassis' not extended them so have fun. Ahwell keep at it mate.
Oh and cheers i found the led strips you were talking about. My teeth are pretty shot thru from hours and hours of chewing on torches while fixing something in the bush. (the joys of being the one mechanic in ya group of mates).
Not sure how often il use them on my truck tho since its a hilux... haha

Re: Filthy Safari
Haha yeah, its definitely a good learning curve. Im unsure on what exact path I will take, gotta catch up with a couple people and see what gets suggested.
Yeah not sure when I will need mine, just part of future proofing
Ive got the offcut about 2m or so which I use alot with my Jump Start pack as a portable light source.

So managed to sneak a few hours on the truck today...
Got bored and wanted to see what the color theme was gonna look like
Pulled out the springs to make my life easier
Might just give up and turn it into a Rat Rod

Pulled out the fuel tank
Undid a few other bolts and moved some things around... Now she has the start of the MWB conversion
Just need to make the lower arms up, and then I can start measuring up for the new driveshaft and brake lines. Need to cut and replace panhard mounts and itll all start to take shape...
