1990 surf

Postby Jameshunt244 » Sun May 11, 2014 9:31 pm

Thought I would add my little project. I thought I wouldn't get carried away at first, just get a standard truck, some recovery gear and go have some fun without spending to much money. Some would say I have got the bug, at least early symptoms of it.

I started off with a fairly standard 2.4 diesel turbo surf on 31's.

a few months down the track I pulled off the steps and rear bumper to make it look bigger.

a few months after that I brought some 33 simex jungle trekkers, so in went a 50mm body lift. The front was rubbing with hardly any lock so I had to pull off the front fibreglass flares.

Thats about it for now, ill keep ya posted on winch bar install.

Haha the bug! I've had the surf bug it's hard to shake, threw a lot of money at my one or two.... I took a vx landcruiser pill and it killed the bug, I will not be going back lol,

Not a bad truck all the same affordability + useability ya can't look past em.

If you haven't already look into upgrading the exhaust to help prevent issues with the head, 2.5" would be sweet. How are your c.v.'s liking the simexes?

Haven't busted a cv yet but I am well aware of the potential damage so have been trying my best to be gentle. I'm due for a wof and cert so might put ball joint spacers in so I can wind torsions back down to help cv's a bit.

Does anyone have any smaller mods I should do now before cert? It's pretty rough having to fork out hundreds of dollars just for someone to check that my body lift has high tensile bolts.

ball joint spacers don't change the cv angle. its the diff spacers that do.
ball joint spacer just means you can have higher ride height with factory pre load on the torsions.

Good to know, but as the torsions are wound up doesn't that later the cv angles? Or am I misled? I'm not really interested in going any higher at the moment, there's no guard rub so I don't see the point.

its the lift that changes the cv angle.
winding up the torsions, changing the torsions or using spaces, they are methods of lifting. dosn't matter which way you do it, you get the same change in cv angle.

1" bj spacers is quite good (gives ~2' lift). no need to cut the arms and is well hidden. that keeps the ride soft and flexy.
diff and sway bar blocks allows the rear of the diff to drop down, lowering the cv's 1"

Ball joint spacers help correct camber and reduce the angle on the top ball joint.

Another thing to watch is the increased down travel that spacers can provide. The bumps top usually works on the upper arm so if you put a spacer in the upper arm has further to travel before it hits the stop. This can place the CV joints into extreme angles.

Its worth checking axle rotation with the suspension fully extended and compressed and at lock so you know there isn't going to be any binding.

Matt.

Well i have fitted a damaged arb winch bar to the front. It was off a mitzi so took a bit of cutting to get to fit. Just need to try straighten it now.

I have also fitted garden edging flares, I need to find something to use to make some mud flaps then it's off for a wof.

Well I got my Wof a few weeks back but now I have a large oil leak. It's always leaked just not this bad. This weekend I'll clean engine and see if I can find where oil is coming from. Hopefully don't need to pull to much apart.

Does anyone have advise on common oil leaks? I recently had the cam belt replaced and they replaced other bits and pieces too. So hopefully shouldn't be in there.

Rear main seal, look for drip between engine block and bellhousing, oil filter gasket or rocker cover (black steel cover on top of motor)

I spent some time looking around and cleaning today, haven't been for a drive yet but tightened rocker cover bolts. Bad thing is I snapped one. I wasn't even applying much force. I guess I just wasn't mentioned to tighten any further. But I did find that the power steering is also leaking. Not from the pump but from where the steering shaft runs into it's gears. Hopefully it's an easy fix. It might have been affected by the body lift. All I did was loosen the bolts clamping the steering shaft so it could move up. I'm off for the night run tonight so Sunday everything will get pulled apart and inspected.

Here's a few photos of my bumper.

Things have been going slow at the moment, life gets in the way of Hobbes. My 4-88 doffs should be here soon.

I have a big oil leak. Appears to be from my oil cooler. So if I do need to change that gasket I may as we'll put new extractors on while I have the manifold off. Any other suggestions to do while I'm in there? It's a 2.4lt

What is an egr system? I've heard it mentioned before I assume it's something to do with exhaust gas.

I have been working on other projects for a while but have finished now it's time to get stuck into a sas. I brought the front of a surf with a coil sprung land cruiser diff in it. Everything's there and the chassis aswell so I can take measurements and see how to brace chassis up.

Started cutting out shock towers the other day, didn't get to far, got distracted and headed out and did the wires road track, we all made it up to the hut with near stock trucks. Bit of damage and a bit of a motivation to get stuck into my build.

Don't have enough money or skill to continue with the sas for now, but I do was a blown compressor from the building site, so Sunday afternoon I mounted an on board air set up, seems to work pretty good so far.

No progress on the sas but I finally tidied up my bar, it's tidy enough to not be a target anyway

But more progress recently, I installed a winch, a bit of a hassle changing the bar so I could get the fairlead right forward so the rob doesn't rub on anything. That's done and the winch got a chance to pull a hilux around at the patetonga run the other week.

Next job was the intercooler, unfortunately I couldn't get it to sit square with out modifying throttle body so it's in there crooked but once the scoops finished it won't be seen

Got busy in the shed this week and made up a scoop to full the hole in my bonnet, pretty rugged but I'm happy with it, just got to paint it now, does anyone have any advice on painting? I was thinking rub down with 400, couple of light primer coats, rub with 800 then 4 or 5 top coats, rub with 1200 then a couple coats of clear

It's time to make a plan, I'm going to be using my truck as our wedding car at the end of June. I drive from auckland to flock hill on the 8th so I've got til then to
Make and fit some front mud flaps
Put new tie rod ends in
Seal leak in rear window
Paint bonnet
Radiator flush
Oil change
HUGE clean
Rebuild turbo

Wish me luck, time is ticking there small jobs but I don't have a shed so things get harder in the dark

:D I was trying to find a build that I was halfway through reading and I stumbled across my thread so i guess I'll give a little update.

I have completed my Prado sas, had a bit of fun trying to get it set up so I could do more than 50kph. Not 100% but I can now get 70ish before the death wobble. Which is manage able now as its a trailer queen.

I made a simple winch cradle as I was getting tired of having to pull full bumper off to get to the winch. Also had to do this after moving front axle forward 60mm.

I'm relocating to Sheffield so thought I would loose some weight and length to make it easier to fit in the container with our stuff so chopped off the back.

Next on the list is back wall on cab, roll bar and rear tray. I'm on a tight budget so progress is slow and I have to improvise with what scrap I have and limited tools, it's fun learning and hopefully when I get onto the next one I can build something road legal :D

Last minute work before moving on Saturday, cut rear of chassis to reduce departure angle and cut door skins up so I can throw away doors rather than drag them down the country. Hopefully now I can fit it in the container with everything else

Haven't had much time for the surf over the last few months, threw together a roll bar to stiffen up cab for a trip into Avoca.
I've got a shed & house to build first but then it's back to it. Positive from that is I can take time to collect parts and plan the rest of my surf build.
I just brought a kzn130 auto so I plan to throw the engine and trans in and modify trans to manual shift.
Does anyone have some good advice when modifying trans?

I will have a manual box and 2lt for sale shortly

Trans is easy to wire into manual shift, 2 relays and a couple diodes.just using the inihator switch as your control?
I also added a transgo shift kit to the valve body, to make gear shifts a bit more positive under power. ( granted im running more power than the average kzn130 tho)
modified surf, hardly drive it seem to keep modifying it....
