Heres what Ive been working on lately, had to buy an auto to replace my first manual one as I had a big ankle surgery and clutching is difficult..

Bought this 95 2.7 diesel.. only 95000 kms on it, auto, 4.8 diffs, lsd and all the options..



that was its first little mud bath,definitely not enough power.

insert bd30td manifold and td04l-13t turbo..



and a qd32 intake and a front mount cooler



tyre doesnt interfere with the piping which was good



hide it all minus bonnet latch



body lift and jeep cherokee springs



steering was shocking so in goes 2wd steering mod



thats much much better but the seats in terranos are so uncomfortable. in with these that were gathering dust in the barn then



fix up the front geometry with some super lift arms that came on a parts truck (i derusted and repainted these black )



next will be an adjustable panhard rod




2.5 inch exhaust the whole way,.... , this isnt my image but we made one based on this image




throw in some cheap bling gauges (they have a purpose too)



and you have one pretty quick terrano that does standing burnouts and lights up the rear tyres on dry tarmac. I imagine the factory flares wont last long when i put 33x10.5s on or the first bush trip. have a few more things planned for it then when it gets colder it will probably start getting some real damage done.

Another thing worth noting is the EGTs, this fuel pump is wound way up, probably maxed. Without the idle adjusted down to 700 it idled at about 1150rpm...

EGTs never get higher than 610 Celsius . Take a look above at where I've got that probe ...

Boost is at a lazy 22psi.

And Not a puff a black smoke in sight.

No the recaros were not a direct bolt up as they came from a bighorn but I managed to get them in pretty easy with some extra steel channel on top of factory terrano seat rails so still slideable, now just need to find out the legalities of swapping seats? Heres pics of one in for comparison






in other news we finished the exhaust and had to flip the rear swaybar to stop it from squishing it




and first blood , not from offroading but from on roading , slowed right down when heard this damage from a stone in the tyre, lets just say this terrano can go quite quick.. and can report the steering is very stable

Hard to say when it starts spooling because of the automatic and 4.8 diffs, theres just so much torque there.. say your rolling down the road at 60k with it in 'HOLD' so shes locked in top, 4th, gear. and sitting at 1400rpm, The moment you plant it it just goes to 2500 rpm with 25psi and just waits for the wheels to catch up, hard to describe and no the gearbox is not buggered, its very healthy, just the torque converter being overwhelmed i guess.. cant imagine it will last long

boost at 100kph cruise is 6psi, egts 350.. spool is virtually instant maybe .6 of a seconf to 25psi from there. still looking for the plunger to mod the fuel pump too. still havent got the egts past 638 deg C.

I would love to bolt this setup to a bd30 or qd32.

next on list is electric fans and winch, maybe snorkel with leftover 2.5 intercool piping

you mention jeep cherakee springs, but they appear to be red? aftermarket? how's the ride?

Yea im not too sure what they are, they were out of a jeep cherokee which he told me wasnt lifted, but they def. look aftermarket. maybe sagged?

Longer than the stock spring however and more coils = softer. so I got about 1.5"/2" lift from them and theyre nice and soft which I like, hopefully flex up a bit better. Meh im no expert on suspension.

Hated the chamberlin springs I used to have, with both the stock spring and chamberlain spring side by side they were the same length one was just way harder, and the factory spring was hard enough!!

oh and best thing about those recaros... FACTORY SEAT WARMERS

Unfortunately I realize it might be a no go for me, as I have the factory twin battery setup, but think I do some investigating on other routes for piping all the same. Do you remember what model & where intercooler is from? Did I read the bonnet latch is gone - what have you done there to keep it down? The extra length piping hasn't made things more laggy?
How did the top mount compare, or was that with the previous vehicle & different turbo? Still worthwhile? I only want to run 15psi or less.

Do you remember what model & where intercooler is from? I/C on mine was brand new. $220 for a 330x280 same side exit. If you go top mount assuming terrano, use either bighorn 3.1D or Mistral 2.7 I/C

Did I read the bonnet latch is gone - what have you done there to keep it down? recessed bonnet pins. i hated the idea but I liked the front mount enough to justify them

The extra length piping hasn't made things more laggy? definitely not

Still worthwhile? top mount was on a different but almost identical vehicle minus the exhaust manifold i have now. The top mount improved EGTs (vs no intercooler) by about 50 deg C, the front mount about 150 deg C, but that could be due to the exhaust manifold helping hot exhaust gas get out the gate quicker

I only want to run 15psi or less. flow is underrated i recon, i focused this build on flow. air in quick and smooth and gas out quick and smooth. the fuel pump is maxed out as far as i know and it runs 25psi. EGTs still allowing for alot more fuel. Mind you its early days, have yet to really give this thing its beans

Mass air flow is the all important factor in making smoke free power. More boost = higher mass flow, removing restrictions also = higher mass flow. More boost + less restriction = lots of power

Yep, also a Terrano, in fact, also a 95, in Green (though not two tone), also on the Shore (for work anyway).
Yeah, I have a Bighorn 3.1 IC and scoop sitting waiting under the house (erm, as well as big dump pipe and plenty of other toys), then started hearing about those W/A ICs, which really appealed in terms of leaving the bonnet intact and getting better cooling at low speed (cant fit fan on the top mount bighorn unit). Now with proof a front mount fits and works, I've come full circle on what to do!

Nice one man yeah just flick us a pm if you need advice, I had a bighorn IC on my last one and a 10"fan underneath it pulling air through at low speed which did a good job, but I much prefer the front mount because its not sitting right in the heat of the kitchen. Downside being obvious, its gonna block up with mud. But road driving its clear who the winner is. I may add a pusher fan on the front of it to help the twin pulling radiator fans ive got going in now at low speed, will have see how my EG temps go when I get stuck in the thick stuff.

Installed a nice VDO oil temp gauge to see what the trans is doing.
Things been getting too hot offroad. Motor and trans up to 125C so time for new radiator:



Way bigger trans cooler, not connected with radiator cooler. Id rather if something gets hot they are independent of each other:

Things are much cooler now. Haven't got trans above 95C. Still all tucks away nicely. Just how I like it.

Heres the next piece to the puzzle

TD27T pump with QD32 N/A 11mm plunger and cam plate. Timing set to 0.45 TDC

Manual gearbox or QD32 engine swap are in the pipeline this year

Progress has been steady. Threw in a garrett GT2056 turbo and redesigned the downpipe. Having complications with surge, have to keep the boost down at 1.4bar. Got a bit of panel damage at woodhill the other week and happy with how it performed, big power from this little engine but some room for improvement with flex I think. The rear LSD is still working very well. Get funny looks turning up in a rather stock looking terrano, till they hear the turbo.

But everytime I lifted a front wheel I was having trouble. So.. Been slowly working away at a 4.88 front LSD. Picked up an entire navara C200 rear axle with LSD for $50! Opened it up and found no cracked spring plates!! Added some clutch plates in from a tired old H233 I had kicking around and slipped it into an R200A from the front of a V6 Terrano. While I was grabbing that, I grabbed the front axles and hubs (double ball and cage C.V.s and larger brakes) to get rid of the horrible tripoid c.v.s on the R180 diesel front diff I have. Thanks Lax2wlg for that info, his truck sort of the influence for this build. Another bonus is the cast arms that come with the C200 axle.

The V6 being 4.6 geared meant I had to swap out the pinion from the C200 to match my existing 4.8 setup. Everything fit perfectly. Will find out if its up to the task when I get it wheeling later this month.

And in order to get the R200 into a diesel terrano, you need diff drop bushings (available from 4x4parts.com). This drops the diff low enough to avoid fouling the engine sump. Bonus is reduced C.V angles, allowing me to remove the upper bump stop in the front.

Absolutely scored, a triple core copper radiator with copper end tanks that someone had custom built for the D21 for $150. Was in mint condition and was told it cost him $600. It was thick and it juuuust fit, but she doesnt get hot now even when booting it round sand dunes.

The next plan is to get a bit more flex from the rear. Some KYB shocks originally for a ford F350 give you about 2-3" more travel each side in the rear. Couple that with the V8 ZJ grand cherokee springs and I'm hoping for some impressive rear flex. Will track these down sometime soon. Ultimately want a set of BFG muds at 255/85r16, a true 33.4" tall tire at only 10" wide, should fit the build nicely being tall while not super heavy.

And still havent found a QD32 thats not $2000+

You only really need the qd32 bare long block and flexplate....basically everything else bolts on....a n/a one from a Nissan homey or elgrande van is around 400 and just bolt all the td27 bits onto it.

Cheers for that. I didnt think of that. Mind you I leave the bar in road driving and remove it completely before doing anything off road. Only takes a seconds with the rattle gun and a 14mm socket

I haven't been looking that hard more hoping something pops up on the Facebook feed or saved searches. This engines got plenty and will just keep hammering it till it lets go then I'll have to sort the 3.2

No point having the power if you cant get it to the ground so far I think it'll need;

longer sway bar links and disconnects
handbrake cable extension - how does this not snap on trail? looks like its getting really stretched so I disconnected it (edit:temporarily) to get more movement
i have longer than standard springs, but i need to go longer
diff breather needs lengthening. popped off.

Woodhill claims another set of wheel flares

no shocks/springs in just to get a feel for its movement

standard shocks next to new ones.

570mm open, 375mm closed

new shock eye to eye
650mm open, 380mm closed

and installed bolted to the top to show there is still about 50mm of drop available- this is the point where my coil spring is just about to fall out - with these shocks in and my current coils, the coils will fall out on trail. Note the jack stand safety extension.

The hunt for longer springs begins.

current spring is 425mm tall, 140mm OD wide, 8.5 coils and 15mm thick.

I think they are fronts from an XJ cherokee. Might try get a grand cherokee spring see if its longer.

Bought an electronic boost controller and it has completely solved the turbo problem, did exactly what I wanted it to do and has really bought the engine alive.

So before I was getting massive turbo surge at low rpms the boost map doing something like this

Now I have something like this, no flutter or surge, really nice pull from the engine. Probably the best thing I've purchased for it so far.

Also the front LSD project is complete. Auto hubs had to go.

It is still very comfortable as a daily.

Major mods so far include:
Factory blacktop TD27t with 104kms
Garrett GT2056 turbo at 30psi
Qd32 intake manifold
BD30T exhaust manifold
complete 2.5" exhaust, 1 hi flow muffler
4" intake, 2.5" pressure side
Electronic boost controlled

Front and rear 4.88 geared LSDs - rear at factory breakaway, high enough to be effective but still road driveable, front C200 lsd w/extra clutch plates

Front Superlift Upper control arms
V6 front double 5-point axles
Front diff drop

and in the pipeline still/when i find them cheap enough - snorkel, c200 rear axle for more ground clearance, qd32 engine for a thousand more torques, winchbar+winch and 255/85 muds. I dont like my chances of ever finding a manual conversion that isnt the small box.
