My 185 shiny

Postby skidmark » Tue Sep 27, 2016 6:09 pm

Wasn't going to start this thread yet, but out of town and board...

So my shiny/tow vehicle is a kzn185 manual owned it for about 5 years.been meaning to Intercool and exhaust on it for a few years.but now that I like to load it up and tow my other pig I have more motivation before I pop a head.haha

First step is I've ordered some gauges that I'm going to fit to see what the standard readings are and see how the changes effect them.
Have a boost gauge I'm replacing with

Which is boost controller and afr gauge (mainly just wanted elec boost control)

And a egt

Will fit and get a baseline.
Have factory intercooler to go on and will build new exhaust before uping the boost a smidge.(current max is 12, fuel cut is around 14 or 15?)

Also have OME 40mm lift in it but thinking about changing it as I don't like the ride while empty.

Anyone who's had 1kzte exhaust upgrades, what size and what did you think? There's lots of varying opinions of 2.5 or 3. Want something that's free flowing but don't want it exessive loud.

Does ss vs ms have an effect on note?

how does the 185 get on towing something (surf and trailer) heavier than itself? crawling up hills or not too bad? does the weight push it around on corners?

sorry no help with your questions.

It's not horrible, but far from perfect. It does struggle so bit on hills but even on the flat I kind of stay bellow 70odd kmh. Have had a scary moment coming down the Kaimais where it tried to pass me but didn't have enough weight forward on the trailer/trailer got a puncture and started swaying big time
Ideal world I'd have something bigger to tow with but budget says no!

Forum member Zed fitted EGT Guage. QUOTE
"Ok since fitting the pyro (pre turbo) and not towing I was getting:

Standard truck
100kmh 380ºC, top speed foot flat ~840ºC

After fitting a BlakeNZ 3" Dump & full mandrel exhaust
100kmh 360ºC foot flat top speed 784ºC

What I have also noticed though is if you shift down a gear and let off the jandle a bit the EGTs drop very quickly. I have an Auber gauge and sender fitted to mine. Haven't done any towing yet but am.planning to fit a water/meth injection system triggered to come on at say 750ºC. That should drop the numbers even further :-)"

That's good info.im considering mounting my probe in a egr blanking plate if there's space.otherwise I'll drill and tap manifold.
Are thoose Temps intercooled or non Intercooled?
My truck is manual, not that will effect egt too much

intercooled. putting the dyno fan on the intercooler allowed us to get stable/repeatable power figures, so we could do accurate before and after figures. From memory, this dropped the peak EGTs 100 degrees. (from a heat soaked, multi dyno runs figure)

Now that you say that I do remember reading that in a search....will be interesting to get a baseline of non-intercooled before I start.well I think so.
Will end up doing one thing at a time, probably starting with exhaust

park it up, spray lots of CRC onto the dump pipe studs for a couple of days prior to trying to undo them.
If you want to save a fair bit of time, buy a aftermarket dump pipe, and then fab the rest up yourself. I think the final loudness is more dependant on the size and construction of the muffler, rather than the 2.5" v 3" question.

Looking on the website, that gauge measures your air/fuel ratio not your exhaust temps.......can this be done on a diesel? I often hear exhaust temps are a good indicator for a diesel.

EDIT: I see you have 2 gauges and I got confused over the dual gauge functions of the first one - ignore me

Hey I see your point of view, but...
i organised the KZN 185 exhaust and down pipe jig to be made, as a service to other surf owners.(I had a 185 at the time)
I'm not an engineer, do not make the exhausts, and do not receive ANY money from the sales. And it was referred to as a Blakenz exhaust by ZEd, simply as he had nothing better to call it at the time.

This will give me my baseline standard settings, mainly just for my curiosity and see how each Mod changes the egt
