Well not a lot has been happing on the truck, as it has been Ski season most of my spare time is spent on the hills....

I have however just purchased a welder & taught myself to weld...
Not overly pretty but exhaust is complete...

So, after reading pj1 build & seeing Bud's bull bar build.. on top of now having a welder as well as a bit of a grasp on welding...
What the hell lets build one!

Got the basic framework together as well as some protection for the bottom of the rad.

yeah looking awesome, are you going to add tube to the winch bar or cut factory bumper up and fit around what you have made?

Plan is hoop in middle & side wings like the xrox bars prob go chunky though like on paj1 build.

Hey.
The alloy cover is a good look... not being critical, as I cant see the detail but just check everything is still ok after you first you that in anger.. its a large winch and the framework looks a little light.. especially with the mounting in shear.

Have a gander at Toms Offroads gallery to gauge if your steelwork is substaincial enough.

The Xrox bar ends are bolt on and replaceable (well mine are) so might be an option to order some replacement ends... save making them
Dont follow me. i'll get stuck and need a tow..

Its a mixture of 5mm box & angle for the mains. 3mm plate & angle for the rest. My biggest problem is the mounting to the ... cough cough chassis rails. Still gotta tie it back to the subframe for some extra strength, but yes will be keeping a close eye on it.
Did think of that however want ro go chunky-er than the xrox

Nice work! Good to see a winch bar with a proper view of the drum so you can spot a snarl up before it gets serious.

In case you haven't seen it already, check out http://fozroamer.com/ - kinda similar build with a Subaru Forester.

I think most manufacturers dot have view of the drum as it would look crap if they didn't have a winch, so thir thinking could be make 1 bar & sell it as both winch bar & bull bar.
So impractical, I would say 10% of my past winching would have been straight. So always getting bunched up. Need to have good view..

Na hadn't seen the subie. Looks good.

So if your rope normally gets bunched up are you not concerned with the minimal clearance between the winch and the fan?

Nice fab work , but the winch / fan clearance is a red flag for me as with even a slight even rap of the rope it's going to hit / break the plastic fan

I had same thought, can't see it in any pic's but thereis a plate behind the winch, minimal to keep more air flow but should protect fan.. fingers crossed :)

lookin good

I have made a couple winch mounts in the past for 9500 pnd winches using 50x50x5mm angle and 6mm or 8mm end plates and never had an issue with them bending, where as my m15000 warn has bent the 8mm flat plate style winch mount that is currently on paj1, (although it did have a nissan hanging off it down a near vertical embankment)

tie that in well to the monocoque chassis as many places as ya can and it should do the job.

It's all about design and load points, the bar on paj1 only has 9 pieces of steel to its whole construction and weighs less then the factory bumper with all its plastic and bolts and chrome

look forward to seeing the finished product

Hi, there is a saying ------ "If you can't say anything good then say nothing" ----- Your build is GOOD :- now the question, are the Red front eye bolts your recovery points ?, I will await the answer before I say any more. One more :- I know what my 4be looked like after using and abusing it is that what your plan is ?

GO FOR IT,

Hahaha was awaiting a comment on the eye's na not for recovery. just for look & to hook the winch to when not in use. had to have 2 for balance..
Still working on snatch recovery locations. whatever it may be, looking at using a short strap to even the load to both sides. at the mo will just go with winching. slower but I can keep close eye on everything. will likely stick to shiny runs, (famous last words) & been on a few of them when tracks have turned pear shape, was Ok for me back then as I had the tuff truck It was high & dented..

Still remember towing a shiny new Nissan Pathfinder through a mud bog at Woodhill. After the fact it would have been 2inch thick mud caked over grill bonnet windscreen & front half the roof. took him 5 min to clear enough mud from the screen to see...

I had no mud flaps near new boggers, 6" lift & shortened tray. opps & left it in 2wd...

Cripes I hope Kama dont come back from that. He seemed to see the funny side..

with the snatch points you are probably best to use the bar you have made to mount the hooks as the bar will take the load from the two bolts holding the hook on and the nar in itself will spread the load accross the front of the chassi of the vehicle ...as apposed to attempting to make or incorperate more mounting points on the frame of the car

always like to hear it from 2nd party, I am leaning that way. just gotta work out how to tie the bar back to the sub frame as I am not overly happy with the factory bumper mount. it's good & I feel happy for winch with slow steady pressure. snatch however is quite the opposite more so depending on the other driver... if I go with the bar & hooks. forged.. I was still thinking 2 & use both with a super grunty strop to balance. it more.
anyone used them?

I don't know exactly how this fits in with the body but if you can get some plates in this area with bolts right through the longitudinal sections of the frame and extend it forward to winch cradle/ bar would be the go

Typed this 3x now keep getting interrupted before I post it..

Mine is a little different to the pic, I can tie it back easy enough, just not sure about rules, will welding to the subframe be a WOF thing?? I know repairs to structural need cirt, but what about an addition??

still keen to use a bridle type recovery rope (properly rated) when snatching anyone else used/uses this, results??
I know it needs to be long-ish to get steep angle..

Cheers
