divorcing a hilux transfer case
divorcing a hilux transfer case
in getting a v6 commodore engine/trans soon and wouldn't mind putting it into something fun, problem is the transfer case , sure you can get an adapter plate to put the trans onto the toyota transfer case but they are way out of my price range.. (700-1000$)
i can get my hands on a few stuffed hilux gearboxes with good transfer cases on them , how hard is it going to be to CAD up a plate to fit the front of the hilux transfer case , macine in a relief for the bearings that stick through and turn it into a divorced transfer case? or is there an easier way?
the way i see it i can add in brackets onto the front plate for the mounts to the chassis, i can take the female spline out of the toyota gearbox and weld it straight to a plate to mount a uj to, or the spline on the transfer case looks like it will take a toyota cv joint, modify the cv end to go into the commodore trans..
so anyway.. ideas please
cheers

Tis easy as shit.
The front peice is the tail housing off a 700r auto (same as v6 commodore and 304 holden). The trnasfer case is divorced and completey sealed, as is the back of the tail housing.
I designed the adapater with an auto fluid seal and roller bearing for the coupler to run in. The other half of the adapter (for the transfer case) is actually from an old gen 1 hilux 4 speed. (the one with the round headlights).
If you look very closely in the background, you can see an alloy plate that has been machined for the trans case bearings, and had a seal retainer plate mounted on the front. This effectively makes the trans case divorced, and if you mount a UJ on the facotry coupler, you could hook this trnasfer case up to anything.

Ugly is a state of mind..... and the state of my truck!
Chain Drive?
Nope the chain drives were in ln106 lux's weren't they?
This one is out of an ln60 series lux.
Hasn't been running yet as transplant was only started yesterday.
700r's look weak as shit in the alloy housing, so I have used both mounts, and beefed up the adapter join with 12mm pfc channel and profile cut plates.

Here you go,
Tail housing with adapter plate tigged on. Coupler bearing is what you can see here
Seal retainer with coupler shaft sitting in it
Front half of the transfer case adapter with bits tigged on
Coupler is machined from the Holden driveshaft 27 spline coupling, and the toyota 21 spline coupling. They are rebated into each other, pressure fitted and tig welded together.
Looks like this when it is in the truck. (transfer case mount is not at this stage, so the exhaust can be done)

I have a similar setup to what your using rok, except my trany has been rebuilt with a new out put shaft that has a toyota spline. I havent had any issues yet (although my truck has been in the garage for the last eight months) my adapter is simply the first 20mm of the holden output housing and the last 60mm of said 4spd hilux gearbox, both welded to a dirty big 12mm plate and bolted together with a seal in between. seems to work.
I totally missed this thread. Here is my adaptor, fresh in from the US - but you are right, they are pricey
The Nissan TC is a bit longer than the Toy one, and has an offset rear output so you'd need to swap in a prado rear axle instead of the Hilux one. I still have it sitting here, and wasn't able to use it since the MU is too short to have all that drivetrain under it...
I'll measure it when I get a chance if you are still interested.
Steve

yeah still keen, let me know how much you want for it too.
work is progressing slowly on the divorced transfercase, i have cut the last 20mm of the gearbox side near the transfer case including the seal, looks like all i need is tig up some sheet metal to cover up the holes
this staying home looking after a 15month old is seriously cutting into my 4x4 time..

Do you think this setup could be done on a landcruiser trans case rok?
could you post up some pics of that alloy plate please

Re: divorcing a hilux transfer case
Does anyone know if you can regear the high 2wd on the LN106 transfur cases or put an overdrive on it? Ive got my diff set how i want it (at a small fortune in my eyes).
