Agree its a well set up vehicle, accessories worth more than what was paid, however it is unlikely ever to be able to be used legally on the road here.

As it hasn't been registered previously in NZ it will not qualify for compliance under the current emission regulations.

It has a lot of good equipment though that will swap to another vehicle so is still good buying.

Sorry lr90nz ...but its a 1990 and every thing before 91 does no have to comply to those rules ,its bull shit i no as i was looking at bringing in a early 2000 defender td5 90 .ltnz put me on to aa as they do the complyance most cars /4wds after 07 will meet the standards.so anything before that will not .but if its pre 91 .import and take to compliance and if its road worthy it can go on the road .

Bit of an up date, iv been talking with Landrover nuts here in Christchurch and they are rather excited about what I have.I have two fellas turning up tomorrow morning who are in the Camel Trophy club overseas they will hopefully confirm that is actually a rather rare camel truck.

I read somewhere that genuine Camels are easily traceable by registration number (UK) or chassis number. Lots of odd spec too such as manual front windows and elec rear on the Camel Freelanders. So you can open window and swim out when sunk in a river apparantly!

Truck should be going through the process of getting back on the road shortly.
Talking to compliance fella today and he has said for this truck to have had a temp reg and wof in the past it has already been through the compliance side of thing which means getting it back on the road isn't that hard :mrgreen:

Picture of the diesel powered heater unit mounted in the back of the truck, has temperature control mounted near where you sleep.Diesel is sucked form the tank and vented outside.

Bit of an up date.
Took truck out on its first trip. Went really well....i was surprised :lol: Afew things. I fitted a new boost gauge as old one was maxing out. Truck runs 20psi so seems to have had some work done to it. Also it has the 5 speed with the standard "H" pattern which iv been told is the later gear box, also mate said the motor looks to be a 300tdi.

After the trip my planned mods are
-remove mud flaps(lost one already)
-bigger/ wider tires
-Mack 5 rims
-Possibly body lift
-chromoly cvs and axles
-sort twin fans
-water to air Intercooler
-tidy wiring( spot lights and light bar)
-fit new air filter

Cool, obviously all legal now eh :D :D

Your over boosting issue will be the waste gate on the turbo stuck closed. Common problem. Not good for the motor.

H pattern shift means it's got the R380 box and LT230 1.2 ratio transfercase. You could fit a 1.4 ratio transfer if your going to fit bigger tyres and want to keep your road manners. Low range is the same between the two.

Axles n Cv's are all good, it's the diffs that don't enjoy mistreatment. Excess wheel spin and all that, welds the spiders to the shaft bla bla bla do a search. Fit a locker in the rear, job done :D :D

Leave the body, do a spring lift, get that awesome suspension working for you :D :D

Mach5 rims are cool, dooooo it :wink: :wink:

Oh yeah, waste gate issue quick bush fix :wink: :

Pull waste gate actuator hose off at T piece under where air intake joins turbo.

Crank your compressor up and feed your air duster up the actuator pipe tube in the direction of the waste gate.

Reach round and hang onto the waste gate pivot point at the end of the actuator linkage and with the other hand feed it what ever it takes via the air duster to get the linkage moving while wiggling the linkage gently.

I pump it up and release it over and over until It's free and moving "loosely". It's the sorta thing you need to do everyone in a while, they seem to jam up for some reason. It's bloody odd as they are a good Garrett unit :!: :!:

Thanks mate for the heads up about the wastegate. Is there a way to tell if the transfer case has already been changed over?
Truck has a twin shock set up in the front which seems to work really well, seemed to ride sweet.
Also regarding the rear diff, looks like the fella before new about that issue as he fitted an ARB rear locker, now just on a hunt for a front one.
Hopefully can chuck up a pick with the new rims and tires soon.

I've picked up the Mach5 rims they are 16". I'm trying to figure out which tires would be best suited to run on the Landy.

The tires on it are to narrow and I don't like them, they are basically 10.5". So I'm after something abit wider, I'm trying to figure out what tire size, 33 or 34" and how much difference will that extra make...hmmm

My options I'm looking at are 33 or 34"x 11.5 inch jungle trekker 2s, Mickey Thompson Mtz in 33x12.5, wrangler or bighorn. I've already had a set of all these tires bar the MTZ.

What are people thoughts?

What do you plan on doing with it? Narrower more aggressive tyre will work better in mud, wider less aggressive tyre will work better in river shingle. Keep in mind Land Rover diffs aren't a fan of big tyres so won't take as much abuse if you step the sizing up.

See, that's just plain wrong in regards to strength.

Factory 7.50 16 or 235/85 R16 tyre is 32.2" in diameter

Most run 255/85 R16 which is 33.3".

Quite a few run 285/85 R16, which is 35.1"

Just like you do with Toyotas and Nissans, if you want to push it hard on those tyres, you slap a set of chromoly axles and CV's in which are available off the shelf from any number of Retailers online

If you need to push it even harder, just like Toyota and Nissan you upgrade your diff heads with aftermarket ring and pinion sets, lockers etc

With ya dirty ol' over boosted 300tdi, if you can fit 35's under it, hell yes!!!!!!

Otherwise 33's or 255/85 R16 are a good choice. May be a bit narrow for you though.

Due you want wider for looks or performance???

Generally most people seem to believe Land Rovers of any model go better on narrower tyres, as the vehicles are usually pretty light weigh.

Where did you score the MACH 5s ? Very cool rims, didn't know they were available in NZ. In fact I think the original UK manufacturer may have stopped making them. 285/75/16 also a common choice. Slightly taller and slightly narrower than a 33/12.5/15.

I second DBs opinion on diffs. Personally I have not found them to be as bad as made out.

I have had my V8 110 since 2001 and never bust a diff. I'm pretty rough on it.....lots of grade 5 west coast trips. Ran 33's for years then changed to 285/85/16 (close to 35") silverstones in 2009. I also ditched the Salisbury rear and fitted a RRC/Disco axle like yours with a KAM locker which was a great mod as scored rear discs at the same time.

I have busted 2 front halfshafts (original 10 spline - now replaced with 24 spline HD front halfshafts from Howat Eng in Welly) and 2 CVs (1 cheap Taiwanese copy and one ropey secondhand one of unknown origin) and the CVs were both broken after the front locker went in last year! And that's it in over 12 years.....

The tires are currently Goodyear 255 85 16. This truck isn't driven all the time so the tires can be rather aggressive. I do a lot of trips to the coast( muddy) and camping trips and found these not to be wide enough.... I've never had a landy before and will be forking out big $$$ for new tires so want to get the wright size, a bit of extra ground clearance would be nice to.Is something like the 34" jt2 an over kill? There's not a lot of price difference between the 33 and 34s but will that extra inch make a huge difference on the drive chain?
Part of the reason for a wider tires and rim was to get them in line with the guards or out past them as it won't be long before they get ripped off in there current late :(

These Mach5s came from a mate who had 3 sets, they had come over from the UK a few years ago( they didn't cost me much considering how hard they are to find)

Does anyone know how I can tell if it has chromoly CVs and axles? Will they be stamped?

Stall it on a 30 degree rutted incline, wedge one of the front wheels in front of a big rock, full lock on the steering, leave your center diff lock off, 1st low, full noise..
