Query on Fj40 free floating axles

Postby Pj_Marsh » Wed Feb 11, 2015 2:00 pm

I'm in the process of sorting a handbrake for my fj40, and my plan is to switch the drums to disks using subaru leone calipers. The only thing bugging me is the calipers will only work on a free floating diff/axle. Anyone know what year fj40's came out with free floating diffs? I know the front is, but im not sure on the rear. It's a '75.

My mate has a Fj40 with semi floating axles and leone calipers. Why do you need full floating axles?

fj40's came out with full floating rear axles from about 1980 onwards, the leone callipers will work on a semi floating axle (they are a floating calliper ie they slide in and out on pins to allow for semi floating axle end float) theres plenty of them out there on hilux semi float rear axles :D

The guy who has fabricated the brackets reckoned they would only work on a full floater....Here's the link for the brackets. Reckon they will work? http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/car-parts-accessories/toyota/brakes/auction-844699990.htm

His brackets only fit a fully floater but that doesn't mean you cant get brackets for semi floater also. Plenty of disc conversions have been fitted to semi floaters using similar parts.

Tires are like boobs, they always look big until you have played with them for a while, then you just want a bigger set.

if you have to fawk around with shit your time and money would be better invested in upgrading your axle to a full floater so you can use those brackets rather than piss about measuring up and fabricating some brackets for a semi floater :D

note: some of the earlier fj40 full floater housings had 6 or 8 bolt holes for the brake backing plate and those brackets are drilled for the later 4 bolt backing plates axle housings :D

60 gear is a lot wider than the 40.
70 gear is same width but spring purchases are appox 30-40 fifferant per side.
Imho i would opt for a 70 as its easy
Otherwise graft in 60 front and rear

What's a 70 series diff like compared to a 40 or a 60? I've seen a few 70 series diffs going on trademe

as above 70 series is same width as 40 series but you have to cut the perches off and relocate them, 60 series is wider and same thing with the perches you have to relocate them, if doing 60 series the rear is piss easy but the front is a bit uglier its doable but the RH side perch ends up mounted part way up the diff pumpkin, have a search through ih8mud there are a couple of thousand threads about it on that site :D the yanks often keep the perches where they are and outboard the spring mounts on the chassis but there's a shitload more work doing that :? :D

73 and 74 series run the same 9.5 " diff head. its the same beast as in the 40

the 70 gear that runs coil springs are the units with the smaller hilux running gear, so be aware of that

thanks for the info, ill do some shopping around and see what I can find. I liked the 60 series width, tires vs bank is better then fiberglass rear quarter vs bank but then I'd have to do both front and rear.
