check water in the fuel sensor. assuming diesel.

otherwise you need to let us know what engine you have and also exactly which light came on and what was happening at the time it came on.

i don't know the petrols sorry.

all i can suggest is jump onto the surf forums and find the method to get the codes manually. that way you can do it yourself in case it was a code reader issue.
possible someone has written down if there is any other non-ecu item that can trip the engine light.

if it was a sensor fault it would store a code.

it could easily be that the code reader doesn't work with such old systems.
hence i would go pull the codes the old fashion way. should be a procedure on one of the sites, also check out the 4runner sites.
its not hard to do and will save you some $$$.

my mechanic did a scan for a favor but he stated that no mechanical fault was found , however i was under the impression the 93 ECU is not compatible with newer scanners? i have codes available to me so i may just try it myself..... thanks guys

found the fault the code is 52 52 Knock sensor (KS) -circuit Wiring, KS, ECM,,,, now is this easy to fix? and thanks all with my questions!

i don't have a book on them to check with.

check the obvious, if wires been hit, corrosion on pins.
otherwise change sensor.

also on those age vehicles is ecu's. a common thing we get in the diesels of that age is the capacitors in the ecu start to fail and it can cause weird faults to come up.
