Upgrade from a ct20

Postby simintrev » Sun Jun 25, 2017 11:23 am

Hello all im sure people have posted on this before. Im rebuilding a 3L out of my ln106 4x4 hilux and im going to turbo it. Just wondering what other turbos people have used other than the ct20? Id be wanting to run around 10psi ive had a quick look into td04 turbos and t28 nissan turbos.

Cheers!

10psi is stock boost for ct20.
there is meant to be someone down chch way that modifies CT20's. best thing they can do is get rid of the carbon seal.
however i think the problem is i have yet to see anyone that has done any serious turbo matching for the L series.
plenty that have thrown on various turbo's, compressors wheels etc and say they work fine with zero evidence or information on how well they actually perform.

Do you have a watercooled ct20 or the non watercooled one . The late watercooled one is considered an upgrade for the early one so it could be worth doing that . I have that on a 5l and it goes great

the early one (round port) doesn't fit 3l/5l engines.
the later CT20 that fit 3l/5l are all water cooled.

I had my ct20 turbo modified by Steve Murch. Didn't drive it before so don't know what a standard ones goes like but I'm pretty happy with it. Pics on page 2 of my hilux build.

It was a between $600 and $700 with me supplying turbo. I think I mentioned the price later in my thread.

Spools up really quick full boost by about 2000 rmp (My rev gauge isn't that accurate)

I'm currently running 13PSI with boost compensater and a home EGT tune. A mate of mine had the same motor with a new turbo he got off a turbo place in chch. It was running 12LB and was tuned by someone else and it did go quite a bit better. Not a proper comparision as different tyres and tune etc but his did seem a more efficient turbo however it was about $1500 with an adapter onto the 2lte exhaust manifold.

Cheers,
Pete

Yip that's who he got it off. Certainly better than the modded ct20 and much better than a standard ct20 but not sure if it's worth double

Yea we have built quite a few of them and its matched quite abit better than the ct20 but as you say the cost gets up there But then you are getting a brand new turbo. we also have built quite a few up graded ct20s but they getting harder and harder to get good parts for

If you have the money I would go with on if jarrods. He can sell all the bits you need for it. Worth trying to call Steve Murch as well and ask what he can do new? He is on Facebook under Steve Murch Motorsport get his number off there. Best to try and call him.

if you guys get a chance to speak to these turbo guys, see if you can get as much data as possible and see if we can make it publicly available.
these engines are getting old and no one is going spend the $$$ to do the testing required to build a turbo that suits.
the amount of sales they would get is so small its not worth it. so it would be nice to be able to hold onto this info before it gets lost.

Had a yarn to nz turbo chargers in nelson here fella said the quite often rebulid and change out the compressor wheels on ct20s and ct26s to a more effecient billet 6 blade wheels compared to the standard 5 blade.
And turbo care do a custom td04 for them.
