3rd Gen Surf (KZN185) doing multiple front wheel bearings

Postby gregc5 » Sat Mar 03, 2018 2:03 pm

Hi team
Has anyone found a solution to the flimsy dust seals on the front of the 3rd Gen Surf? The bearings are fully sealed and hence not re-greasable or maintainable. If the dust seal fails then water etc can get in and the bearing fails quite quickly. Got less than 10 000km from the last passenger front.
Because they are a press out-press on job they are not a backyard DIY. Certainly not for me.
Has anyone found a way to improve the sealing? Use my surf offroad a bit. Ball joints are a known weakness on these, bearings seem to be in the same category in my experience? Getting close to $300 just for the bearing kit so not a cheap job either.

Ideas welcome!!

find what bearings they are. there is range of seals used in bearings (double seal etc). might be able to find something with better seals.

260Kkm and never changed one. I suspect you have something else going on. I'm frequently balls deep in rivers and mud so it's not a road queen. Lots of towing too.

I've seen some bearing brands that do a 12month/20,000km warrenty on ebay maybe give one of those a go? Then at least if the problem continues it's not costing you each time and if you're lucky you'll find a pair that last. Look for the German or USA made ones on Ebay just double check compatability.
