Mufflers

Postby Mas Mac » Mon Feb 16, 2015 2:18 pm

I have a nice roadworthy 1993 Samurai JX80 with two worn out mufflers. I could hardly believe it when my garage guy told me he cannot replace the two old mufflers with new Samurai mufflers because they don't exist or even with new non-Suzuki mufflers because they are not compatible with the brackets on the exhaust pipe. He says the only option is to buy used mufflers from a wrecked Samurai but I do not want crappy old stuff. I want to maintain it to a good standard and keep it roadworthy and legal for quite a few more years yet. So is my garage guy on the level? Anyone else had experiences like this?

Where abouts are you Mac? In NZ almost every exhaust shop custom makes exhausts to fit whatever using off the shelf mufflers and pipe benders. I know in the UK a lot of exhausts are indeed premade items?

Any exhaust shop will be able to fit new mufflers and make up new pipes brackets etc to suit

The guy needs to get a MIG welder and practice.
Easy as to fit any muffler with the right dimensions, pipe entry and exit points etc. The brackets are the easy bit.
Who ever fits used mufflers?! I was a mechanic for 12 years and that guy is having you on.
Its a Suzuki 4x4, not a rare vintage car going to bloody Pebble Beach for gods sake.

Just because of your name and topic, I'm going to recommend you see Mac's mufflers in Tauranga. They're good fab and exhaust guys.

Actually I do have a mig welder and can use it, but I don't have the time to do the job myself. I have decided to take it to a muffler repair shop (not my usual garage). Thanks for your input, guys.

I meant your mechanic needs to get the welder, not you mate.

Last time I checked most 1300cc suzukis don't have a turbo to muffle their exhaust...
