SJ413 axle spline counts

Postby Sausager » Tue Mar 31, 2015 10:18 pm

Hey guys. Can someone please confirm the spline count on an SJ413 axle? I seem to be finding conflicting info.

The reason I ask is because I have bought a vitara diff head (alloy casing) to fit for lower gearing, but I count 26 splines. The info I read is that the SJs have 22 spline fronts, and the vitara diff head is meant to be a bolt in.

Cheers in advance!

All SJ/Samurai are 22 spline front and 26 rear from factory. Early model Vitaras (pre 94 I think) were 22 spline front and the later models were 26. It would be a much better idea to swap the gears into the SJ diff head anyway as the alloy Vitara ones are weak as and when it lets go it will wreck the gears as well.

Cool, cheers for that. I was going to swap the rear over regardless. So now I have a reason to haha. I presume the ring and pinion will still bolt straight up to my SJ diff head?

Out of curiosity, will this vitara head fit directly into my SJ rear diff as is, being a 26 spline?

you will need this to do the conversion, ( sidekicks and trackers are the yank version of vitara/escudo )

Yes ring /pinion will fit SJ413 center (will need backlash etc set up) but as above you need something to hold the cross pins in due to the ring gear being thinner, another option which is pretty rough but should be fine on an offroad truck is to tack the pins in place.

Yes the 26 spline head will fit in the rear but as stated it won't last and will destroy the gears when it lets go.

Thanks for the confirmation, that's good news. Interesting that the 26 spline diff head will fit straight into the back diff. I will swap them onto the SJ carriers though! As mentioned above, I was going to use the weldwell retainer kit too haha.

The front vitara diff I have at the moment still has the axle in there (the passenger side one). Is a slide hammer the best way to get that out? Or can I pry it out?

Did bit of research and it seems they will pop out with a few good whacks on the flange with a hammer. Go nuts, not as if you need that bit anyway!

Where is the best place to buy the crush sleeves from, and what can I expect to pay?

Or who in Wellington could swap the r and p onto the SJ diffhead and set it all up for me?

Cheers

I've got full rebuild kits from lowrangeoffroad in the past. Came with the crush tube. Pretty easy job so long as you have the manual and access to a torque wrench, dti and a fish gauge.
There are install instructions online that list re-using the crush tube but for what its worth and the hassles it could prevent you may as well do it right with a new one.
