Wider track for on road

Postby wattsy » Mon Jun 01, 2015 10:06 am

My Escudo is a 97 SWB 1.6 with Factory 16inch wheels, I would like a little bit more stability for on road use and as the tyres will soon need replacing wondering what would be a good solution? Don't generally use off road much I have asked previously and it sounds like 15's would fit but a cheap option may be off a V6 one if they are a slightly wider rim/offset.
Thanks for any help

If yours is a 1600cc you should be able to fit 15" rims without modifying anything but would pay to try a rim before you buy. Where in NZ are you?

Manawatu. They are factory 16inch rims 215/65/16 tyres. Seen a few with them on seems its around the 97 model that they changed.

The grand vitara rims (V6, I don't know about the 4 cylinders) have a larger offset so will give you the wider track you want.

If you are going to take it offroad you might have some guard rubbing but I can't confirm this.

Drop the suspension and harden it up.
Throw the rims and run a set of 19s or bigger with low profile tyres.

Thats what lads do to get there weapons to corner better.

Its not a sports car, I have had two Surfs in the past with all the mods, this is just a little work hack. It just seems a little unstable at 100 so was thinking a slightly wider track may help.

Pretty sure the vitaras track width is similar to a hilux. My past vitaras swb and lwb have felt pretty stable with minimal lean before the ass slides out. Must be driving like an animal or the sway bar bushes might be buggered if you feel like stability is an issue 8)

I'd start by looking at bushes first, sway bar, Suspension arms, panhards if fitted. even sloppy shock bushes may be an influence, or even buggered shocks.

You could Hagen widen the front, just need spacers and a stub axle made up.
