G13a sump onto 16v g16a

Postby RJF » Wed Jun 22, 2016 11:40 am

Hey, about to put my 1300 sump onto the 1600 just wondering if the rail thats bolted on with the conrod bolts needs to be removed or will the sump fit with it on with a bit of mucking around?? Cheers

Mine just needed a bit of hammering on the inside to clear the rear bearing cap. Need to mod the pick up also. Quite a bit less oil capacity in the 1300 sump though so I'm modding mine to allow more volume.

Ok so did you just leave that rail in there? iv done a couple 8v 1600s so know they need a bit of a bang around at the back to clear the housing but they dont have that rail, im guessing its for strength?? . cheers

Do you mean rails like this?
Image
I've never seen them but I thought they were only on later g16b blocks. My motor didn't have them.
Pretty sure the sump can still be hammer modded to fit around them.
I remember grinding a little bit of the upright part of the baffle plate at the back of the sump too instead of hitting it more. Down to near the spot welds if that makes sense.

Yea that's what mine looks like, it looks as though its going to hit the baffle as the bottom of the rail is a bit over 40mm from the seating surface between the block & sump & the baffle is only about 35mm. I'll try trimming the rest of the baffle back a bit & see how it fits otherwise I'll take that rail out can't be too important if most motors don't have them. Thanks for your help

I imagine if those rails were fitted as an update to an older design they may help extend the lifespan of the motor. It looks like they might reduce cross block torque and cracking over time. I'm unsure if there are other differences.

I would mod the sump, or cut the flange and fabricate a brand new one rather than remove them. There seems to be a few ways people have tried cutting the baffle to suit to so google it up.
