Pajero ideas.
Hi guys just got a 1993 pajero 6g72 v6 auto and got her going and warranted need to do a few more things to make here 100% but in the mean time i want to know your guys thoughts on what to do with it in terms of do other springs fit in the rear to lift it and get some more flex, is removing the rear sway bar ok and what will i need to fit 33s and is it worth it? it also has a factory locker and the airbag lift under the springs.

Re: Pajero ideas.
its not going to flex any more than it does now mate you can take the sway bar out to let the suspension move a bit freer and easier but you're limited by the design and amount of travel in the suspension linkage(s) changing the springs wont do anything to give it more flex it'll only change the ride height and spring rates etc, you need to get the arc welder out and do some serious redesigning of the suspension to get it to really flex up
Re: Pajero ideas.
Its a paj with a locked diff, if it doesn't get thru first go. Reverse up n do it again faster. It won't break easy.
My opinions with what you got especially with the diff lock, is all you need is a good set of muds and a winch and you couldn't ask for more realy.

Re: Pajero ideas.
i understand with the ifs that the fronts not gunna flex much at all but will removing the rear sway bar make that much difference in the rear i was quite a way off hitting bumpstops and my wheel lifted. maybe remove the rear sway bar and as longer shock as the spring could handle?

yea J_dub a winch will be in the works just looking for abit more flex atm in the rear to keep those tires down and diff clearance so seeing what tyres i can get away with or what i will need to do to clear 33s ,

Re: Pajero ideas.
Its that trailing arm arrangement in the back that is kind of a PITA, the same as you would find in a coil sprung Land Rover.
Its uses a pin-type arm with a binding bushing that limits the potential wheel travel.
Dont just floor it to get through things fast, its bad practice and you'll break things.
Put a front locker in it and it will increase its offroad performance by about a million percent.

Re: Pajero ideas.
if you think the suspension isn't cycling through its maximum travel you could pop the shocks out and disconnect the sway bar and try and flex it up somewhere in the backyard to see if they are limiting travel but don't go getting big expectations just by the virtue of the suspension design its not going to have much in the way of flex its only designed for going over bumps not big axle twisters

Re: Pajero ideas.
Mite be the idea il see how she flexes with no restrictions thanks guys now just for the tires.
And Thanks for the info Josh i do like the idea of a front locker but not to keen on popping cvs to much i think im going to try finds a old starion rear diff (Hens teeth i know hahaha) and use the lsd carrier in that to have a rear locker and lsd up front so the steering is not being put under huge load.
Im not a huge fan of hitting things to hard either wound rather crawls up things thats why im trying to keep the rear on the ground as much as i can to prevent having to use to much momentum and start braking things.

Re: Pajero ideas.
I've got a V6 pajero front diff in my series 1 (leaf sprung which artics better than coil) and as long as you run oem cvs you will be very hard pressed to break them. I've also got simexes (33") and haven't smashed anything. The bell on a pajero cv is bigger than a safari cv, the axles are slightly smaller though . Don't waste your time on an lsd front. A locker is much better and is either on or off, an lsd can be either unpredictable or useless when a wheel lifts.
The design of most coil rear factory setups is to make a rear which is roadworthy and doesnt have excessive play, yet this limits articulation. Put some tractor linkages in for pivots though and its all very different...
Just my 2c

Re: Pajero ideas.
I think the gen2 pajeros use the radius arm rear suspension. It's the same as the front on 80s, Landys and Safaris so limited in flex by design. I dont know if you can get softer bushes but that would probably help with the flex but removing the sway bar should help. Removal of the front sway bar on an IFS usually works as well, this was the best thing I did to my Vitara to help with ride quality and flex when offroad. Didn't notice much difference on road but this would vary vehicle to vehicle.

Re: Pajero ideas.
i think its time for some experimenting haha.
Anybody know if 33s will fit no body lift and trimming? or is a bodylift needed? or the biggest tire i can run without a body lift

Re: Pajero ideas.
need a bodylift unless it's a 6g74 (3.5v6) or 4m40 (2.8 diesel)
biggest stock will be a 31"
LWB springs in rear will raise it a little.
have heard of some guys whipping a bolt out of one of the trailing arms where they meet the diff to gain articulation. bugger that though.
IMO they do fairly decently.

Re: Pajero ideas.
Your model has the smaller front diff so a locker is not available. You can fit the bigger diff from a manual but you'll have to shorten the prop shaft. The cv's are smaller too and if you are too hard with it you will break em with 33's. If you fit the manual diff then you can fit 3.5L or 4m40 diesel drive shafts which are a lot stronger. Don't bother lifting the body. You can mod the hydraulic lift on yours to stay up all the time. Tyres vary in size (within a given size), and rim width and offset make a difference too. Some 33' tyre / wheel combinations will fit with just the suspension lift. You'll need to remove the mud flaps though. Removing the rear sway bar will make a big improvement to articulation. Be fine on the road, but be wary offroad when tackling steep banks at angles with the rear locker in because the rear wheels tend to drive underneath and push you over a rear corner. Its a scary thing when the front wheels leave the ground. Winch choice is easy, get a Runva with dyneema rope. They are reliable and great value. If the battery doesn't look shiny new, replace it with a sealed for life Exide 600CCA one from the Warehouse for about $200. Mitsi PTO's are very good but not an option for you with the auto box. Keep on top of the maintenance and you'll find Pajero's are underrated. You'll get good at towing Toyotas and landrovers home. I know I have!
May the force be with you.

They will fit but you will have a very hard riding and tall (but only in the rear) vehicle! I'd try and get some LWB paj springs to put in it. Or some old SWB worn out gq Nissan springs.

Re: Pajero ideas.
Why not a 1" body lift?
Factory suspension and steering geometry isn't altered in any way, will still handle and feel the same.
That and mod ur factory lift to stay at high level

Re: Pajero ideas.
progress haha light bar. cb radio a few other little things.
My major issue is sourcing or making a snorkel and tires i tried on my mate 33s on a 10inch rim with a -44 offset looked mad but rubbed alot only really on the front plastic bits of the bumper havent tried flexing it so unsure where else it rubs.
So what i am thinking of doing is building a bull bar to reduce were the tires will rubs on that front bumber.
Next question is what offset are you guys running with your 33s obviously -44 stuck out quite alot haha. or is it not worth going 33s and going to a 32.

Go 15x8 rims instead, will hold the bead much better and usually less offset so won't stick out as far.
