Had the same problem with my car a few years back.... They wanted over $300 for a new key with transponder in it...
So I defeated the transponder system and got ordinary keys cut....
Only thing is I lost the central locking from the key.....

Open up the key you have and take out the rfid chip and tape it inside the steering column shroud and then you can get ordinary keys cut

I have done just that. Took a few attempts to get the chip in the sweet spot behind the plastic cover over the key barrell. Once I got it right I glued the chip.
There are you tube vids of how people have done it....

Miti dealers charge about $400.00 in Chch for a new chip key cut. I just want a 3rd key as another spare and doesn't matter if the cheaper cuts don't have the auto door remote but what about any immobilizer/alarm to get around?
