1992 Terrano TD27T questions

Postby keepwalkn » Mon Nov 05, 2012 8:41 pm

Hey all, from Perth, WA :) Been lurking for a few days, thought I would sign up and hit you guys up for some info - I searched for days but couldn't find a direct answer.

Picked up a Terrano a few days ago...
265km, TD27T auto, big trans cooler behind the grill from factory. Trans shifts smooth, its a bit slow when you are at 4200rpm but I think that is to be expected?

Power windows were stuffed, aircon needed converting and regassing and the front suspension bushes are shagged.
I got my auto sparky to fix the power windows and do the aircon.

I have a few questions relating to the transmission:
The torque converter locks quite early - anything above 60km/h and it will lock up, if I slowly squeeze the pedal it won't unlock and go back to 4th, instead I have to keep pushing and it will unlock and drop back to 3rd.

Is this do do with a vacuum sensor somewhere not telling the transmission to unlock? If so, where can I find the sensor?

Once it is locked on the highway at 90+ it never unlocks, even up hills I just slowly put my foot day it it lumbers up the hills - Should the converter unlock and drop back to 4th before locking again?

I have also adjusted the TPS switch for the auto trans on top of the pump to stop it from shifting too early. This was a great little mod! :D

Thanks!

The converter only locks after 60km/h. If it stays locked below 60km/h (coasting to slow down for example) it will shift down with minimal throttle input.

Is this just normal behaviour? Did Nissan think the little TD27T had enough torque to pull hills from 1500rpm from 60km/h?

Sounds about right, when the engine is warm mine seems to lock around 60kph.
Generally works just fine for me though, i.e. pulling up hills.
Sure you need to apply more throttle at times and make it kick down, but then that's the way an auto is isn't it?

Perhaps you could use more torque? i.e. is there a problem else where with the engine?
That said too, it is a 2.7 litre engine, can't expect miracles, but you can pull a lot more power out of them quite easily.

Yeh, power upgrade is on the cards:
boost to 13psi and tuned pump to match, perhaps advance the timing a little.
no intercooler as I don't want a top mount and there is no room up front for a front mount due to the massive transmission cooler it has.
Just waiting for my auber instruments boost and EGT gauges :)

Does anyone know what sort of power the auto trans will handle without too much of a problem?

I run a water/air intercooler and a big trans cooler. No need to chop anything.
Also run water injection. That is pretty cheap too (kit was about $500.00) and very effective - again no need to cut anything.

The trans seems to handle anything thrown at it other than heat and I think most people would be surprised exatly how much heat they can generate and how much cooling you really need.
You need heaps.
I'm running the biggest engine oil cooler that I could find, at a guess at least double the capacity of the largest transmission cooler that I could find and that is working ok now.

The autos are pretty strong as long as they dont get hot.
As for the motor they will run 16psi all day, every day no problem

Thanks for the replies. I was thinking 13-14psi with no intercooler to start.
What setup are you running Stranger? (pics?) I have tried the Frozenboost kits and was less than impressed on my Patrol (SD33T, 16psi custom garrett turbo) I binned it and put a 600x300x75 front mount on and picked up 15% more torque.

A small barrel style water to air i/cooler may work well in between compressor outlet and the intake manifold? (i have not measured up) I have a spare intake manifold so I will make a plenum like the TD42 guys over here do.

The motor can handle the boost but what is the turbo good for? The HT15's and 18's on the SD33 and TD42 are blowing hot air after 13psi and quite restrictive with exhaust flow I have seen...

Sorry, should have clarified this abit better, turbos handle between 16-18psi, the td27 will handle 25psi happily. I have heard of guys running 30+ no problem

What turbo chargers are you guys running for the higher boost? I have a custom GT20 on my SD33 that I might move across to the TD27.

Another questions is what size rotor head do the TD27 VE pumps have? Is it 10mm?

the td27t has an 11mm head. Im not sure about the non turbo.
Im running a hybrid turbo on mine but its getting a vgt turbo on it soon.
The qd32 intake manifold make a good difference in the mid torque area.

The stock manifold is crap I made a new one for mine but I am also looking at a manifold off another engine. The bd30ti which is heaps better.

Also look at the 12mm head if your going to go nuts a rd28 rev spring it will allow the engine to pull harder up top

There's a photo here
http://www.offroadexpress.co.nz/Forums/ ... 25&t=28159
It's not complete there as the water system isn't hooked up in that photo and neither is the water injection.
I haven't a clue how this would compare to a front or a top mount, but it does make quite a difference. I get about 40c drop across the intercooler.

I'm just running the std turbo up to 18psi. Between the intercooler and water injection around town I never hit more than 600c on EGT. I could crank things up a bit more, but it's a tow wagon and reliability is paramount.

I have a Subaru WAIC, I will install that I think :)

Will a 1992 TD27T have EGR? I have not got the car with me so I couldn't check...

In that case, the vacuum line has been disconnected from the EGR...Will this cause any ill effects? I am best reconnecting the EGR vacuum line and then blanking it off right?

Well, got the car back after rebuilding the front end...she's all new!
Drives really well.
Put some new tires on the front end and got the rears balanced.

I had a quick look behind the engine and I can't see an EGR pipe at all?
Does the EGR bolt into the intake manifold?
