TD27T aftermarket turbo intake piping?

Postby keepwalkn » Wed Nov 21, 2012 7:49 pm

Just finished fitting up a custom TD04HL-15T to my TD27T.

I am wondering, those of you that have fitted an aftermarket turbo, what did you use for intake piping from the airbox into the turbo?

It is very tight to fit a silicone bend - I thought that you guys might have used something from another car that has a recess for the alternator banjo...?

Pics attached.

start with an intercooler. do it once do it right. then go to your local muffler shop and get them to make the bends, tig them all together into as few pieces to install as possible, less joins means less leaks.
Waiter...there is a drought in my glass.

No, he's talking about the intake on the turbo...there is nearly no room forward to the alternator, that's why the stockers have that crappy little cast 90 deg fitting on them. You certainly can't use exhaust bends...
I think you'll just have to squeeze a silicon 90 in there...

you can buy 180 degree bends on ebay out of silicone. they work well.
Your manifold should be there soon and by the time you have that on you will have a little rocket

I got an intercooler - Subaru WAIC - This is the first stage. Get it running, get the intake finished and the exhaust complete.

Yeh looks that way. I will get a 2.25" to 2.5" reducer bend and trim it right back. What size is the factory piping from airbox to turbo - 2.5"? I will ebay the bends tomorrow.

It goes really good now, just needs to be retuned, too smokey down low. Can't wait for this manifold. (cheers bud) Piss off the EGR (which I think is stuck open) and the intake relief valve.

Builds boost alot faster than the stock turbo:

The intake relief valve is slightly open, and I have to back off a little to be a bit nicer on the autobox shifting from 1st to 2nd WOT (every auto terrano I have driven has been lazy shifting 1st to 2nd WOT)

Video would be 10x more useful with gauge positioned near tacho so can see rpm vs boost...
Another option would be to get an alloy bend tig'd to turbo intake, then use rubber pipe from there. Would require removing front housing to weld up tho.
Whats the TD04HL-15T ? as in whats it originally off and whats been done to it?
Cheers,
Nath

TD04HL's - popular upgrade for the 2l SAAB's.
I had it on my SD33T - Made 160hp and 360nm of torque low in the rev range.

The 15T compressor is a little big for the TD27, I have a smaller 13T wheel and cover that I will put on once I finish the car off - I might modify the 13T cover like you suggest.

Boost VS RPM would be nice, next time.
I was hoping a trained ear might be able to match RPM to boost them selves. It is definitely making boost earlier and harder than the factory turbo.

In terms of mods, it has clipped turbine and machined scroll to improve high end flow, ported inlet and smoothed WG port.

Is that a "wax custom job" or stock? The pieces are falling into place.
Nice turbo mod. Might have to do a bit of research to keep up with you Aussies
Watching with interest.

Cheers,
I keep looking for the loose nut behind the wheel, but I can't find it!!

QD32 manifold.
I had this TD04 laying around after I had it on my SD33T.
Thought I would chuck in on for shits and giggles.
No doubt I will be going to the 13T wheel in a couple of weeks as the 15T takes a bit to get moving.

The TD04 bolts straight up to the stock manifold (T25 flange), you use the existing oil drain pipe (HT12 and TD04 are identical) and the existing water lines. You only have to modify the water line from the thermostat to use a different fitting (block side). I am going to have a 3" dump made into 2.5" with a muffler out the back.

This is how much room I have to play with for the turbo intake piping...I will be using a 2.25" 90 degree silicone bend:

Thats the bend I was talking about. you buy them off ebay. I was going to use on my setup.
He is using a dq32 manifold like I have. Its a great thing to do your truck Simon. It makes a great mid range torque difference

Ordered one of these:
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll ... 500wt_1156

Cross Country 4x4 so it should be a reasonable quality silicone bend.

Stoked I can retain the standard intake piping and airbox.

All done :)
Used a 2" piece of 2.25" aluminium tube to to join the silicone to the factory intake piping.
