POLL - WD21 owners: Steering mod that worked best for you?

Postby danielbeek » Sat Mar 23, 2013 9:52 pm

So, thought with all the talk around steering improvements it'd be good to see what the numbers are that have tried it, and what the conclusions are.

The suspension lift height should be noted, so choose option that is closest to what you have.

If you've reinforced the factory system, please briefly outline mods, ie solid bushes instead of balljoints on centrelink (pitman/idler side), sliders to prevent twisting, aftermarket kit, etc...

This is a good idea, maybe add idler mods as this is a major source of issues on these?

Interesting to note that the reinforced 4x4 setup, ie replace centerlink balljoints with flat bronze, aka hoohaa centerlink, has been accepted for 10+ years as the tried and trusted traditional solution to the problem.

Feedback round the world for the 2wd setup seems positive, but people havent been doing it for 10-15 years like they have the hoohaa....

Pathy 1 TD27 = factory steering, 1" crank, 31x10.5: inner tierod, idler probs
Pathy 2 VG30i= reinforced 4wd setup, idler brace, 33x12.5: 2" crank- problems with inners & outers
Pathy 3 TD27t = 2wd setup w/bigger TREs, dummy idler to come, near 3" crank - no probs yet, no serious trail time yet though.

It won't let me do the poll....
But, Mine is 3+ inches suspension lift, and 2wd mod with idler brace and reinforced idler.
The 2wd mod is ok, it has longer tie rods than stock, so can handle a bit more travel, but there seems to be a small alignment issue, um, toe out on turns seems to be off. I haven't looked into it properly yet, it doesn't seem to cause any major issues, just doesn't feel right.
I haven't had the opportunity to try to break it yet either, so can't really comment on that (tho worldwide there doesn't seem to be any negative comments on this).
The other thing to be aware of is that a fair few of the aftermarket 'mods' aren't strictly wofable over here....

Full 2wd and steering box/idler mod, 2 inch suspension lift. Drives like a dream now even with the 32s on. Doesnt pull on the steering as much offroad either.
