D21 Handbrake Headache

Postby hamboy » Mon Oct 27, 2014 6:58 pm

Hey guys, as the title suggests the old 'rano handbrake has failed another WOF. I have been thinking of doing away with the drum setup and going for a conventional rear caliper. Im just wondering what could fit without too much modification? Ive got to get a cert anyway so I may as well give this idea a nudge. Any opinions are appreciated

Cheers
Dan

I too hate the drum in disc handbrake. Its useless offroad.

I have been thinking of supplementing it with a hydraulic line locker but I read that theyre not legal here

Off road a line locker would be very useful.

Might have to just to do it anyway

Not had a hand brake in the paddock hack for 2 years so i'm struggling to see how it would be usefull. When the aim was for street legalness, i only adjust up the cable for the check, after loosen it again. The only problem is they made cables a tad short for the fex in the rear. Slack cables mean full droop without the shoes being squeezed on resulting in constant adjustment and premature wear.
You did ask for all opinions :P

Cheers,
I keep looking for the loose nut behind the wheel, but I can't find it!!

I'd just like to be able to leave the damn thing idling on an incline and not have to worry about it rolling off a cliff etc.

I dont trust that drum in disc arrangement.
FJ80 owners have to put up with the same nonsense.

I'm thinking of going back to C200 rear (mainly for clearance) but also because the full size drum handbrake works quite well in those.

a calliper swap isn't hard to do but make sure you find a calliper that gives you full pad contact on the rotor or they wont pass it :D
