terrano trans questions, maybe want to buy

Postby J_Dub » Mon Mar 09, 2015 7:29 pm

Looking at purchasing a terrano with a buggered trans.
Its last of the d21 shape before the r50, with the black top motor.

Its an auto trans.
Anybody have a good auto trans for sale or would consider a manual conversion kit too??

Any issues i may encounter swapping out the trans??

Or is there a common fault to the autos that may suggest the auto isn't completely stuffed?

Cheers

firstly check that the shift linkage is still conected to the trans.

secondly unplug the plugs to the trans and start it up and see if it will shift gears. should still get 1,2 D and reverse and should jolt into gear as there is no line pressure control. if so its an ecu fault not engaging line pressure or solenoids.

failing that if the fluid aint bright red, dump the fluid, take the sump off, and clean out the guaze/pick up, it will give you a good indication of what condition the rest of the trans is in, if there is lots of sediment like filings in the sump pan, the bands are most likely flogged, and the solenoids are probably choked so no use throwing any more money at it untill the control solenoids are out and checked.

even if the bands in the trans was had it you should still have some gears 2nd and reverse at least.. if you have no drive what so ever id say your torque converter is busted.

never seen a jatco trans that has lost all drive what so ever, it has usually been a stripped or broken spline etc in the torque converter....

some mistrals had an issue with losing reverse but that was to do with a particuar springball type valve in the valve body itself.

Ecu is had it. Just google how to manualise the trans with torque converter lockup. Brown plug on trans loom in engine bay is the one your looking for.

Some other searching suggests the high clutches r slipping, which is why 3 and 4 are gone. This means a replace or rebuild

Bingo, The re4ro1a is gernally a good transmission Prone to leaking high clutch seals and there for burning out the high clutch, sometimes get away with replacing high clutch steels and frictions a seal kit and good to go, and get the odd one with a broken gearset, which won't cause your issue, temp sensor issues cause them to drop in and out of lockup and the mistrals have a slightly differant pump that tend to fail and lose reverse couple other issue but they are the most common, band glazes over and causes a poor 1-2 shift

Sounds like a planetary set has got damage.or high clutch has welded itself together... will it go into drive with the transfer case in neutral.

At the end of the day if the rest of the truck is in good nick dont be too concerned about the trans...there are plenty re04's around...its a good manual thats hard to come by.

Sound's like somethings Failed generated metal and Jammed valve's but everythings a guess without driving and diagnosing. secondhand transmissions are easy to come by pull the pan off and inspect it for debry open the filter they are cheap enough don't risk cleaning it out i recentley rebuilt one that had been serviced 10 years ago and failed because the gauze in the filter fell apart and went through the transmission they are cheap insurance.

So I purchased said terrano... Shit another terrano

There's no 3rd or 4th gear at all. Put it in drive and it slips big time..

Worth fixing up though, its a 2 door d21 with the facelift interior and black top motor
