Wierd Sound when turning

Postby tuckertrucker » Fri Nov 20, 2015 9:59 pm

Hi ORE

I've been putting up with this noise for a while hoping it would pass but its just lingering and getting worse.

So when I'm moving foward and I turn the wheel I hear this squealing noise. It also happens when I'm on an off camber road that makes the truck pull to that side. Basically it sounds like squealing breaks but a lot sharper - and only when cornering as I described. It also comes and goes a bit, as in sometimes its there and others its not.

I haven't noticed it in reverse, nor have I noticed it when stationary, but that could just be cause I'm not listening for it.

Any help would be great cause Im about at my wits end!!!

Loose wheel bearing and the disc is rubbing on the stone guard is my guess....

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dAicnJd6zYE This is exactly the noise I'm hearing. But only when turning - not going straight. And its a little more constant with mine.

if the bearing is that loose its rubbing the stone guard you should notice the very very wonky steering.

i've had similar recently. turns out it was worn out brake pad and it was hitting the wear tab when turning. it was just one pad worn due to one seized slider pin.

Jack the wheel up and check for play, and see if the noise is from the bearing by spinning the wheel by hand. You may be able to track the noise to a stone guard this way also. If bearing is quiet and the wheel spins smoothly then you may be ok with just tightening it. If it feels rough and doesn't spin smoothly then it is probably best to replace it

if the bearing has come loose then its worn, look at replacing it soon.
if you spin the tire and bearing feels rough its completely stuffed, replace it immediately.
you can't feel a bad bearing when its full of grease. wash the grease out and then spin it. if you feel any rough spot replace it.

Just to clarify for me, the front wheel bearings are between the CV joint and the locking hub. The shaft coming out of the CV is what the bearing rides on, and the hub sits over the bearing?????

I've only even dealt with trailer wheel bearings.

The wheel bearing is basically just the same as your trailer bearings except that the spindle is much bigger and hollow to allow the cv joint shaft to go through the middle of it. The wheel would stay on even without a cv fitted. You will have to take off the free wheel hubs to get to the bearing adjusting nuts.

If it is a wheel bearing, they can be tightened, and drive on for another 50k.

They're not difficult or expensive to replace, and if they're OEM and getting on it may pay to replace them. But they wont kill ya.

Just in case it is not wheel bearing related...The power steering belt slipping under load?

Nope not the belt. Checked it already haha. I'll be looking at replacing the bearing as they are OEM with 230000ks on em. I jacked the truck up and gave the wheel a bit of a tug and could feel a bit of free play. Also when turning the wheel it wasn't as smooth sounding as the right wheel was when I checked it.
