D21, Worth diff locking?

Postby arby5 » Mon Apr 18, 2016 7:45 pm

I have a stock manual 1990 td27 d21 with an LSD in the rear axle but as I increasingly adventure with my mates I am ending up increasingly stuck (mostly due to peer pressure, inexperience and average driving lol) With my suspension flexed out and one wheel on each axle spinning. So after daydreaming at work all day I had the thought that a lockable rear diff might help me out a lot, But I'm not sure which sort would be best or what. Also this is my daily driver and it has an h233b rear axle I'm pretty sure. So any advice would be great cos i've got no idea.

depends what you want to spend? $3-500 + installation for an auto locker up to $2000+ for a good selectable locker set up. presuming they are made for that diff.

Cheapest and most effective option since its probably one of the best LSDs out there is to buy some more shims and repack the LSD up tight. just be warned it gets exciting on wet tarseal with such a nuns proverbial in the rear..

You would see most benefit from a front locker I suspect. As others have said the rear end is already pretty good (so I'm told).

If you can afford it a selectable locker is def the way to go for the front. People seem to be getting good runs with the Chinese ARB copies (worth considering if you can't justify the price of and Eaton or ARB etc).

My terrano with factory lsd and only 98thou Kms is tight as hell, chirps when turning in carparks like a locker and makes roundabouts dangerous. Just kept the oil fresh.
