R20 vs D21

Postby kiwinoz » Thu Sep 01, 2016 11:33 pm

Guys, just wondering:
Are the fwd axles the same spline count?
Are the diff ratios the same?

I have a great '91 D21, and a damaged 1999 R20 (terrano II) manual, just 200KKms

I'm thunking engine Gbox front diff, rear end - into my D21. Steering knuckles too if I MUST do. (D22 size?)
Mech pump, Vac Alt. And hopefully a tastefully done hole in the bonnet...

why bother with the axles? just do the motor, i reckon. Save a lot of work, for no real gain.

The diamond in the rough has got to be that gearbox. You've got some quality box, hard to find a box like that, it will plug onto the back of the engine in your WD21. I wouldn't bother with the diffs, same diffs.

Crash bandicoot used to have R20 and will know more about parts compatibility etc
TOYOTA - The Official Vehicle of ISIS!
And makers of the '92 Camry, where you got your first backseat handjob.

Just change the motor and box and keep the rest of the r20 driveline for spares.

i'm not sure they are the same ratio, but may be. The R20 diffs are apparently 4.375, i thought the D21 terranos are more commonly 4.6x, but there may be a difference tween manual and auto in the D21 diffs.
Not easy to tell, as there is no diff code on the build plates of the r20s (at least not on the two in my family) whereas the codes eg HG43 or HG 46 can be found on the D21s I'm told.

Re the diesel auto is 4.3 the manual will be 4.1 but not sure as the manual r20 are as rare as heens teeth in nz.

The other thing to check is to make sure both trucks have the rear h233b axle as the c200 is different and will be a different ratio. How ever if they are h233b the front will be 27 spline r180's .
So no issue with interchangeability there. The only thing different chassis wise is the location of the front swaybar mounts. The mounts are extended down considerably more to get it level. The only thing you'd want to keep from the r20 steering wise is the steering box the rest is swiss cheese/paper mache and easily replaced by the better designed draglink and tierods from the 2wd navara as the r20 has the correct pitman arm for the swap.
If your terrano power steer box ever gets too much play for a WOF or leaks swap it out for the r20 one then strip out the top half of the terrano box . turn the pitman 180 degrees and replace the idler arm with it.

Thanks guys. All about Patrol/cruisers here, I still like these. Mines a Terrano II, not mistral. Quite a few here, sold through Nissan for a few years, built in Spain. No ABS, Manual big box, intercooled. HB433 rear. Drum brakes tho.
I asked about ratios as this r20 did about 115 at 3000rpm. and still has more for passing. So, that be why I change the axles.
R20 seems to have one less cross member than the D21.
I've look with interest at the 2wd steering mod, I have recently replaced all rod ends with 555 (?) and only have 31" tires.

I see the injectors are bigger thread size than earlier TD27, are the injectors actually bigger?

Took poor old D21 across to Broome recently, via Gibb River rd, only had one problem the whole trip, CB antennae fell off.

Always like popping in here to check things out
