Terrano coolant removal question.

Postby grytvikken » Tue May 02, 2017 11:02 am

Hi got a 2.7td terrano that has what appears to be a head gasket leak just wondering if anyone can tell me if there is a drain plug etc
on the block to completely remove coolant from engine. I believe td42 does not sure about 2.7. I am not near car at moment
to get under and look so any advice would be gratefully received . Thinking about trying product a mechanic pit me onto but its needs coolant flushed out totally to work. I realise its a band aid but if works I only need car for another few months. cheers

head gasket job on these motors is probably the easiest of any motor in existence , jus sayin'.

Why is this motor so easy ? How long would you suspect it would take to do the job?

no timing belts to worry about i guess is why its much easier, as its a push rod engine. how confident are you with motors? theres not much can go wrong.

Last time I did a head gasket on one took about 4 hours.
First time I ever did one took all day. (half day removal half day install)

longest part was taking head into shop to skimmed and new pre-combustion chambers - took him a few days

if you have a torque wrench, the factory service manual (widely available online), the time and some mechanical confidence, go for it.

Thanks might look into doing it , you said online workshop manuals are online ...would you have a link you could share. I have rebuilt diesel 3 litre hilux motors so the Im sure I could do it , its more a case of motivation . But your comments have stirred some up. Many thanks

Awesome, I was just about to ask this same question! I'm just about to do a flush and new thermostat...

But without taking the turbo out of the way, won't the drain plug be a bastard to open???

Yep, thats how I went in today... But the plug is seized and it turned the whole fitting, which caused the water feed to the turbo to snap off. YAY! Not...

So I had to take off the turbo downpipe and engine mount to get the broken bits out. I'll go into work tomorrow and braze it back together. On the plus side none of the exhaust nuts and bolts were seized. Oh and I had no problems draining the coolant!
